The EOS Group operates companies with locations in countries in Europe and in the United States, working in the financial services segment under the umbrella of a holding company. Its core activity is receivables management, including receivables purchasing and debt collection. The Group, which has its headquarters in Hamburg, is part of the Otto Group and is regarded as Germany’s largest debt collection provider.[3]
History
From foundation to the new millennium
The nucleus of the Group was Mercator-Inkasso GmbH & Co. KG, which was established in 1974 as a spin-off of the legal department of Otto-Versand (now: OTTO).[4] In the following year, the company was renamed Deutscher Inkasso-Dienst (DID).[5] It developed into one of the largest debt collecting companies in the Federal Republic of Germany.[6] Its core activity was collecting outstanding receivables for its parent group, but at the same time, DID also worked on behalf of companies outside the Group.[7] Early on, the service provider focused on intensive correspondence and dialogue with defaulting payers and on the acquisition of external clients.[6]
In 1981, DID established DID Euro Incasso-Dienst B.V., a 100% Dutch subsidiary[8] – the first step towards internationalisation. With its acquisition of Debita AG, DID entered the Swiss market in 1988.[9] From the mid-1980s, the company began to buy up non-performing loans from banks.[10] DID entered the Austrian market in 1990 with the establishment of DID Inkasso Dienst Gesellschaft m.b.H, in which it held a 50% share (headquarters: Vienna).[11] In Germany, DID acquired Frankfurter Inkasso GmbH[11] in 1990 and, in 1992, Argus Inkasso GmbH (headquarters: Frankfurt),[12] which was active in cooperative associations. In 1993, the company entered the market in Great Britain when it acquired Collection Agencies PLC (Edinburgh) and Logic Group PLC (Newcastle);[13] these companies were merged eight years later.[14] In 1994, DID acquired a majority holding in Zahnärzte-Kasse AG (Switzerland), and then in 1995, it bought a leading company for publishing house debt collection in Germany, Wallstab & Co. KG.[15] In 1997, the company in Germany combined its field service employees into Deutscher Kredit-Schutz GmbH (now called EOS Field Services GmbH).[16] In the following year, the company established a call centre, Deutscher Tele Kredit-Schutz GmbH (now EOS Serviceline GmbH), and held a 35% share in Mercator Inkasso GmbH. This company headquartered in Kamp-Lintfort had been founded in Duisburg in 1933,[17] it was taken over completely in fiscal 2004/05.[18] In 1998, DID invested in credit reference agency Bürgel.[19] In 1999, DID acquired Kasolvenzia in Bad Rappenau, which operated in Hungary, the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Poland.[20]
From 2000
The year 2000 saw the emergence of CRIF Decisionline, a joint venture with Italian credit reference agency group CRIF.[21] In the same year, EOS Holding was established,[22] introducing the umbrella brand EOS.[23] EOS entered the market in the US when it took over Collecto, a company founded in 1992.[24][25] In 2003, it started operating in Romania through collaboration with a local partner.[26] In 2004, EOS established a special company for medical debt recovery, EOS Health Honorarmanagement AG, which established itself over the following years particularly as a service provider for dental practices.[27][28] In July 2005, EOS acquired a majority stake in Europe Matrix Financial Services S.A. and in doing so launched its operations in Greece, Bulgaria, Macedonia and Serbia.[29] At the end of fiscal 2005/06, the company’s revenue passed the €200 million mark (€203.8 million).[30][31] The highlights of fiscal 2007/08 were market entries into Russia, China and the Benelux countries. At the same time, EOS acquired a stake in direct marketing specialist CoXulto (Stuttgart). By the end of this period, the Group had almost 3,500 employees.[32][33][34][35] In 2008, EOS acquired Inkasso Arena (Switzerland) and Rochester Credit Center (USA). At the end of February 2009, EOS companies employed almost 4,300 people.[36] This was followed in 2009 by the purchase of Spanish debt collection service provider Acción de Cobro from Banco Pastor.[37][38] The company entered the Croatian market by establishing EOS Matrix d.o.o.[39] Thanks to a majority shareholding in WCF Finetrading AG, EOS expanded its activities in commodity prefinancing,[40] a business segment that the company then relinquished in 2017.[41] Revenue increased to €314 million in fiscal 2009/10.[42]
Ukrainian B2B customers were able to access EOS services for the first time following the establishment of TOV EOS Ukraine in 2010.[43][44] In the same year, EOS boosted its presence in the USA through the acquisition of True North AR.[45] This was followed in 2011 by the purchase of a majority stake in Hoepers Recuperadora de Crédito S.A, a debt collection service provider in Brazil.[46] Since April 2011, the company has also been offering its services in France following its takeover of debt collection company Credirec.[47] With the intention of gaining a foothold in Canada, EOS also acquired debt collection company Nor-Don Collection in 2011. This company is a service provider for banks, utilities and telecoms suppliers.[48] In 2013, EOS took over the debt collection unit of Spanish bank Banco Popular.[49] In fiscal 2012/13, a workforce of around 9,000 was generating a revenue of more than half a billion euros.[50] In 2013, EOS purchased SAF Forderungsmanagement from Deutsche Telekom.[51] At this time there were over 50 companies in more than 25 countries in the EOS Group.[52] In May 2015, EOS acquired the Swisscom debt collection subsidiary Alphapay.[53][54] At the end of 2015, EOS and Euler Hermes sold Bürgel to CRIF.[55][56] EOS strengthened its market position in France and Belgium in 2016 through the purchase of Contentia.[57] In 2016, EOS also took on an administrative role for the recovery of outstanding debts for the administrative district of Wittenberg,[58] and acted in a similar capacity in the same year for the Bundesagentur für Arbeit.[59][60][61] The city of Essen engaged three debt collection service providers in 2016, including EOS.[62] On 1 March 2017, Klaus Engberding became Chairman of the Board of Directors of EOS Holding GmbH.[63] He succeeded Hans-Werner Scherer,[64] who had led the Group since 1998, initially as board spokesperson,[65] and then as Chairman of the Holding from 2003.[50]
Present day
Range of services and customers
The EOS Group provides international financial services mainly in receivables management. Its three main areas of activity are fiduciary collection, receivables purchasing and business process outsourcing.[66] EOS says it serves around 20,000 customers,[67] including primarily mail order companies and online retailers, banks, telecoms companies, utilities, the real estate business and the public sector.[68]
Organisation and locations
EOS is a member of the Otto Group.[69] It dominates the financial services segment within the Group[70][71][72] and is regarded within the Group as having very high margins.[50][73] At the end of February 2018, the EOS Group included more than 55 operating companies.[66] It has established locations in 26 countries in Europe and North America (as at: February 2018).[74]
Management and employees
Since 1 March 2017, Klaus Engberding has been Chairman of the Board of Directors, which also includes Justus Hecking-Veltman, Andreas Kropp, Marwin Ramcke and Andreas Witzig.[75] On the reporting date 28 February 2017, there were 7,097 employees working in group companies.[2]
Fiscal year and revenue
The EOS fiscal year begins – like that of the Otto Group – on 1 March and ends on 28 February of the following year, or 29 February in leap years. In 2016/17, the company achieved a revenue of 663.8 million euros (2015/16: 596 million euros).[76][77]
Public image
Credit rating
Since 2005, credit rating agency Euler Hermes Rating has consistently awarded EOS Holding the rating A.[42][78]
Image campaign
In 2017, EOS launched a campaign to improve the image of debt collection. The Group framed this campaign as a way of offering to have a dialogue with even critical voices. Reports on the campaign appeared in the trade press and general media.[79][80][67]
Criticisms
The press occasionally criticises the debt collecting practices of EOS Group companies. This criticism is related to demands for payment of sums that are decades old,[81][82][83] or demands made despite incorrect invoices[83][84] or charges that are excessively high and/or are questionable.[85][86] However, among debt counsellors EOS is regarded as “a provider about which there are only a few complaints”.[50]
Other/miscellaneous
Surveys on payment practices and financing methods
For many years, EOS has been conducting surveys on payment practices in various European countries. In addition, EOS investigates payment practices by systematically comparing specific countries or defined groups, e.g. of companies in Germany.[87][88][89][90][91][92][93][94][95]
In 2003, EOS funded a study at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf on new financing methods for small and medium-sized enterprises.[96] In addition, an “EOS Financial Panel” developed and operated over several years to investigate and inform on the use of various financing instruments.[97][98]
Data theft 2017
In April 2017, around 33,000 files from EOS Schweiz AG got into the hands of the Süddeutsche Zeitung newspaper. They were said to include sensitive personal data like medical files, correspondence and credit card bills showing the names of creditors and debtors, their registered addresses and information on the amount of outstanding debt. The newspaper said that it had obtained the data from an informer, but the informer stated that they were acquired from hackers who had found a vulnerability in the server software. EOS closed the security gap and announced an overhaul of processes.[99][100][101][102]
Buildings
The EOS head office is located on the Steindamm, a street in Hamburg’s St. Georg district. This property of the Karl and Rudolf Förster heirs was designed by Adolf Böhringer, built from 1966 to 1967, extended laterally in 2003 and energetically renovated in 2011.[103][104]
The building that accommodates the company’s Czech subsidiary EOS KSI Česká republika, s.r.o. was built in Prague between 1955 and 1958 according to plans produced by architect Karel Prager. It initially housed a research centre for communication named after Russian physicist Alexander Stepanovich Popov.[105]
Lobbying
The EOS Group is active in a lot of industry associations. It is a member of the European debt collection association (Federation of European National Collection Associations).Cite error: Closing </ref> missing for <ref> tag She is also involved on the board of the Bundesverband Großhandel, Außenhandel, Dienstleistungen (Federation of German Wholesale, Foreign Trade and Services)[106] and the board of SRIW e.V. (self-regulation information economy).[107] Senior EOS staff are also involved in national industry associations, e.g. in Bulgaria,[108] Slovakia[109][110] Romania,[111][112] the Czech Republic,[113][114] and France.[115]
