The AIBO ERS-210 is an entertainment robot created for the commercial market. The ERS-210 was initially released in October of 2000[1] as the follow up to the ERS-111 series, the first generation AIBO, and instigated both children and adults to begin interest in robotics.

Hardware[edit]

The second generation of AIBO was intended to look back on the failures of the 11x series of robots and improve on them, while also being more appealing to the masses. The product was intended to look sleeker and more futuristic than the 11x and adopted the design of a lion cub rather than being explicity dog like.[2] the 210 also added microphones which give the robot the ability to respond to simple commands and it's given name, which enhance user interaction with the AIBO.

Hardware Revisions[edit]

The 210 model went through a single hardware revision, excluding the 220 model which had a space aged design and functioned akin to the 210 but with different beeps and softwares.[4] The single hardware revision was in 2002 when sony released an updated model named the supercore, which had a faster processor and fixed a fatal flaw inside all original 210 models. This flaw was a result of Sony reusing a camera clutch for the head, which was not meant to undergo all of the stress that the AIBO's put it through, causing it to get TAS, PAS, and DHS, which translate to tilt axis syndrome, pan axis syndrom, and drooping head syndrome.[5] Along with these supercore models, the most official color options ever on an AIBO were released. These colors included blue, white, green, and red.

Software[edit]

The ERS-210 utilized Sony's Aperios operating system along with Open R. The software each AIBO came with was present in what is known as AIBOWARE. The AIBOWARE that the ERS-210 used was primarily AIBO Life, and Hello AIBO!. More software was released later, like notably AIBO life 2, AIBO explorer, and a primitive Recognition software which could talk and self dock.[6] User made software is and was very prevalent in the AIBO software landscape, take for example DOGSLIFE which is a very popular user made personality for the ERS-21x and ERS-31x, which emulates Hello AIBO! but improves upon it in many aspects.[7]

Research[edit]

The ERS-210 was widely used by universities and other reaserch facilities to conduct tests for neural function and learning algorithims.[8]
