Early Bird Books is a daily e-newsletter devoted to helping readers find free and discounted ebooks.[1] Its team of editors create specially priced deals on ebooks that span a range of genres.[2] In addition to its e-newsletter, Early Bird Books’ website provides readers with content focused on books, authors, and literary news,[3] including author interviews, book excerpts, and reading lists.[4]

Early Bird Books is one of Open Road Integrated Media's (OR/M) six content brands.[5] Open Road Integrated Media’s content brands reach more than 1 million e-newsletter subscribers.[6] Publishing Perspectives cited OR/M's e-newsletters as "the primary vehicles"[7] driving marketing services like its Ignition program.

History[edit]

Early Bird Books' parent company, Open Road Integrated Media, was founded in 2009.[8] Reporting on the company the same year, the New York Times explained that then CEO Jane Friedman planned to push "online marketing on new readers in the hopes of reigniting the backlists."[8]

In 2011, NPR reported a continued emphasis on online marketing, saying "Open Road backs its titles with aggressive multi-platform marketing campaigns."[9]

OR/M's digital marketing efforts came to include Early Bird Books.[10] In April 2016, Publishers Weekly reported on Open Road Integrated Media's use of social media and online communities,[10] citing OR/M "as launching its own online promotions" including Early Bird Books.[10] According to its coverage, Early Bird Books' e-newsletter had 375,000 subscribers in April 2016.[10] By May 2016, Open Road Integrated Media was “increasingly focused on boosting such digital properties as its EarlyBirdBooks.com daily deals newsletter.”[11]

In June 2017, OR/M’s e-newsletters first reached one million collective subscribers,[12] with Early Bird Books’ e-newsletter leading the way.[12] CEO Paul Slavin commented on the milestone, saying “the response to our newsletters has been extraordinary.”[13] At the time, OR/M had three content brands including Early Bird Books.[12] The same month, Open Road Integrated Media launched three more content brands, growing to include a total of six content brands.[12]

Business Model[edit]

Early Bird Books’ e-newsletter is free for subscribers, who receive customizable ebook deals.[14] Promoted ebooks can be downloaded and read on any device.[14] Early Bird Books helps subscribers discover new authors and books, which in turn benefits publishing partners whose ebooks gain exposure.[3] Their publisher partners include Abrams, Grove Atlantic, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and Ingram.[3]

Through their Ignition program, Open Road Integrated Media markets partners’ titles using content brands like Early Bird Books, splitting revenue only after titles pass historic sales baselines.[1] Publishing Perspectives explains that the Ignition program has benefitted specifically from OR/M's consumer facing e-newsletters.[15]

Early Bird Books also features ebooks from OR/M's own catalog of more than 10,000 backlisted titles.[12] [15]
