Earthquake fish

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Earthquake fish may refer to:

  • Regalecus glesne, known as giant oarfish, Pacific oarfish, or king of herrings, are the world's longest bony fish. They are commonly known as "earthquake fish" in Taiwan because the fish are popularly believed to appear before and after an earthquake.[1][better source needed] At 2018 June 28 to June 29,Taiwanese fishermen captured fifteen earthquake fish in Taiwan.[2]
  • Regalecus russelii, known as oarfish. Similar to their close relatives giant oarfish. They are also considered to be a precursor to a major earthquake.[3][better source needed] From December 2009 to March 2010, unusual numbers of the slender oarfish (R. russelii[4]) (宮の使い “Ryūgū-No-Tsukai”,) known in Japanese folklore as the Messenger from the Sea God's Palace, appeared in the waters and on the beaches of Japan, the appearance of which is said to portend earthquakes.[5]
  • Trachipterus ishikawae, known as slender ribbonfish. They are popularly believed to appear following major earthquake events due to alleged sensitivity to disturbances in the ocean floor.[citation needed]
