East Dulwich Forum, also known as EDF, is a website and internet forum based in East Dulwich, London, online since June 2006.[1]

History[edit]

The East Dulwich Forum was founded in 2006 as a place for residents living in East Dulwich, London to share news, sell used items and post details of upcoming events in the area. The popularity of the forum increased significantly over the next decade [2]. Today, over 100,000 members have registered on the forum and over 1.5 million messages have been posted.

Notable Topics[edit]

Some of the most popular topics discussed by members on the forum include:

  • The implementation of Low Traffic Neighbourhood schemes (LTNs) in East Dulwich. LTNs have been a controversial and politically sensitive issue in the forum, since they were first introduced to East Dulwich in 2020. There have been over 10,000 messages posted in LTN related topics on the forum[3][4]
  • The performance of the Royal Mail postal service in East Dulwich. The perceived inconsistent delivery times has been a hot topic of discussion on the forum since 2020, with over 1000 messages posted by forum members about this topic [5]. The Guardian newspaper[6] used East Dulwich Forum as a citation in one of their reports into the matter.
  • East Dulwich Nature watch. A topic where members report their observations of wildlife spotted in East Dulwich.[7]

Local Politics[edit]

The forum has been used as a platform for elected councillors serving the East Dulwich area to communicate with local residents.

James Barber, the Liberal Democrat councillor for the East Dulwich Ward between 2006 and 2018, was the first elected councillor to use East Dulwich Forum. In 2009, he created a topic on the forum inviting residents to report issues and concerns relating to the local area[8]. This forum topic received over 5,000 replies during the years which James Barber served as an East Dulwich ward councillor. James Barber commented about the success of using an East Dulwich Forum topic to communicate with his electorate in a Total Politics publication in 2012, where he made reference to it being a time-efficient way of hearing people's local issues and making it easy to gauge their importance [9]

James McAsh, the Labour councillor for Goose Green ward, elected in 2018, also maintains a presence on the forum.[10]
