Economy of Gilgit-Baltistan

The economy of Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) is mainly based on trade and tourism.[1] Various tourist destinations attract millions of travelers from within Pakistan.[2] On the other hand, tourists from other countries also routinely visit GB.[3]

The region is not densely popuated it shares a long border with China.[4] Gross state product (GSP) nominal of GB is $2.5 billion and GSP (nominal) per capita of GB is $1,748.[5] GSP purchasing power parity (PPP) of GB is $10 billion and GSP (PPP) per capita of GB is $6,028.[5]

An estimated 1.72 million tourists visited the region in 2017 according to the Pakistan Tourism Development Corporation (PTDC).[2] Travelers had contributed Rs.300 million to the local economy in 2017.[2] The authorities were expecting 2.5 million tourists in 2018 which meant an additional Rs.450 million to the economy.[2]
