Ecosystem function
Functional Aspect of Ecosystem
The functional aspect of the ecosystem includes the flow of energy and the cycling of nutrients. In an ecosystem, energy flows in a non-cyclic manner, i.e., unidirectionally from the Sun to Decomposers via Producer and Consumers, whereas the minerals keep on moving in a cyclic manner. Minerals are withdrawn from substrata and return to the soil, water, and then are recycled. These two ecological processes of energy flow and mineral cycling, which involve interaction between biotic and abiotic components, may be thought of as the heart of the Ecosystem. [1]
