Edecio Torrealba (1888 – 1958) was a Chilean politician who served as a minister.[1]
He was a long-serving Chilean civil servant and politician who held a number of senior government positions, including cabinet posts in the ministries of Southern Property, Agriculture, and Economy and Commerce during the first and second administrations of President Carlos Ibáñez del Campo.[2]
Early life
He was born in 1888, the son of Hortensia White and mining entrepreneur Edecio Torreblanca Dolarea. His father was involved in mining in Taltal and fought on the side of President José Manuel Balmaceda during the Chilean Civil War of 1891, attaining the rank of army major.[2]
He obtained a bachelor's degree in physics and mathematics in 1907 and began working as a teacher in 1910. He married Corina Droguett Droguett, with whom he had four children, including Jorge Torreblanca.[2]
Political career
A public official from the 1920s, he was initially a member of the Radical Party before joining the Liberal Party in 1938. On 12 March 1925, President Arturo Alessandri appointed him director-general of the Directorate of Labour. Eight days later, he became Undersecretary of the Interior, serving until 1 October 1925.[2]
During the first administration of Carlos Ibáñez del Campo, he held several senior government posts. He became vice-president of the Carabineros pension fund in 1927, deputy Comptroller General of the Republic in 1928, and Comptroller General on 9 January 1929, serving until 5 November of that year. He was then appointed Minister of Southern Property, becoming the only person to head the ministry before its dissolution on 13 July 1931.[2]
He concurrently held several other cabinet responsibilities during this period. He served as acting Minister of Agriculture in August 1930 and again held the portfolio from November 1930 to May 1931. In December 1930, he also temporarily assumed responsibility for the Ministry of Development. His tenure was associated with legislation concerning agricultural mortgages in southern Chile and Indigenous affairs.[2]
Torreblanca later played a senior role in Ibáñez's campaign in the 1952 Chilean presidential election. Following Ibáñez's election to a second presidential term, he was appointed Minister of Economy and Commerce, serving from 3 November 1952 to 29 January 1953.[2]
