Edgard & Cooper is a Belgian pet-food company based in Kortrijk. It was founded in 2016 by Koen Bostoen, Louis Chalabi and Jürgen Degrande. The company makes dry and wet food for dogs and cats, plus treats.
In April 2024, General Mills bought the company as part of its expansion in pet food.[1][2]
The brand sells in more than a dozen European countries. In 2025 it entered the United States through a retail deal with PetSmart.[3] Edgard & Cooper is also listed as a certified B Corporation.[4]
History
Edgard & Cooper was founded in 2016 in Kortrijk by Koen Bostoen, Louis Chalabi and Jürgen Degrande.[5]
The name came from their own dogs (Edgard the French Bulldog and Cooper the Cocker Spaniel). The founders created recipes with fresh meat and vegetables as a way to fix their dog's health issues.[6]
In April 2024, General Mills announced that it would acquire the company.[7] The Star Tribune in Minneapolis wrote that the deal gave General Mills broader access to the European market.[8]
Products and markets
The range covers wet and dry dog food, wet and dry cat food, dental and treats. Distribution is through supermarkets, specialist retailers and e-commerce in 13 European countries. The brand sits within the premium segment.[9]
In the US, General Mills said the label would appear nationwide at PetSmart from July 2025. [10][11][12]
Sustainability and certification
The brand is a certified B Corporation.[13]
Edgard & Cooper Foundation
The Edgard & Cooper Foundation was established by Edgard & Cooper in 2016. Its mission is to help dogs and cats in need, globally. [14]
Since 2020, Edgard & Cooper changed its charitable giving to donate 1% of its total sales annually to the Foundation. [15]
Through the Foundation, the company has donated to various animal welfare partners. In 2021, it pledged €188,864 to Human Society International to support medical treatment and neutering/vaccination in Chile and Bolivia. [16]
Reception
Business and trade press have positioned Edgard & Cooper within the broader trend toward premium, “natural” pet food in Europe and North America, with the 2024 acquisition by General Mills cited as evidence of scale and growth trajectory.[17][18]
