Biography[edit]

Farmacia Inglesa Cranwell & Murray

Edmund Joseph was born in Ireland, son of Richard Cranwell and Mary Cramor.[3] After establishing himself in Buenos Aires he was married in the parish of San Pedro Telmo to Dolores Arenillas, daughter of Ángel Arenillas and María Celestina Margarit.[4] He and his wife were parents of numerous sons, including Guillermo Cranwell, who served as Alcalde of Buenos Aires between 1888 and 1889.[5]

In November of 1825, Cranwell obtained permission of the Medicine Court of Buenos Aires to open his pharmacy, located a few meters from the Plaza Mayor, on the street Reconquista.[6] Time later he was associated with Carlos Murray opening the English pharmacy; Cranwell & Murray.[7]

After the death of Edmundo Cranwell, his son Eduardo Guillermo opened the Nueva Farmacia Inglesa, a pharmacy located on calle de la Victoria (between Perú and Chacabuco) in the neighborhood of Monserrat.[8]

His brother William founded the first apothecary's in Montevideo, Uruguay.[9]
