Edward W. Haines was born in Iowa and relocated to Oregon in 1870 during his childhood. He was raised in Marion and Yamhill counties before his family settled in Forest Grove. After completing his education at Tualatin Academy and Pacific University, Haines entered the business sector, acquiring a grain elevator and shipping grain to Portland and San Francisco. Subsequently, he established a mercantile partnership with John Bailey before transitioning to a career in banking.[1]

Public service

In 1898, the year he began his tenure as an Oregon State Senator, Haines founded the E.W. Haines Bank. In 1914, together with John Templeton, he established the First National Bank of Forest Grove and served as its president for two decades. In addition to his banking career, Haines played a pivotal role in the development of early 20th-century infrastructure in Forest Grove. He constructed a water-powered electric plant on Gales Creek to operate the Haines Mill and provide electricity to Forest Grove, Cornelius, Dilley, and Gaston. Haines also organized and presided over the Forest Grove Transportation Company and oversaw the construction of a streetcar line in 1906 that connected downtown Forest Grove to the Southern Pacific train station.
