Artistic Practice[edit]
Arakawa's practice encompasses a range of activity including performance art, object and exhibition making, music composition and pedagogy in collaboration with a network of artists, writers, musicians and other co-conspirators. He is known for sprawling, fragmented performances in which many activities embodying many well-known performance forms (concerts, dance, comedy, theater, lecture, fine art performance) happen simultaneously, with various performers and collaborators doing different activities in different parts of a wide, open space.[1] Arakawa often plays the role of MC and improvisational manager, reacting to and directing these festival-like performances at the same time. Often, Arakawa blurs the boundary between audience and performer, asking viewers to interact with himself and other performers in order to realize part of a work He is also known for the creation of collectives, some of which persist for years and others of which are spun up for a single, hour-long event.[2] Recent exhibitions and performances have focused on Arakawa's interest in queer parenthood and artist parents.[3] Arakawa has been a professor at ArtCenter College of Design in Los Angeles since 2022.
