Einherjar (American Football team)
Einherjar, also known as Reykjavik Einherjar is an american football team based in Iceland. They are the only active american football team in Iceland.[1]
Einherjar play international friendly games against american football teams mainly from Europe as they do belong to a league or official governing body. Einherjar have a senior adult team, U-18 tackle football and U-15 flag football program.
Early years and 2016 Season[edit]
Einherjar were established as a team in 2009, they ran practices and intermittent scrimmages until 5. March 2016 when they played their first Nine man football game against the Åsane Seahawks,[2] earning a 50-0 victory and earning their first win on the international stage.
Einherjar played their first 11 man football game later the same year on the 11th of November against the Eidsvoll 1814s falling just short in a 37-38 loss.[3]
2017 Season[edit]
In Einherjar´s first game of the 2017 season, on the 11th of March they blew out the Starnberg Argonauts in a 48-14 win in Kórinn. Quarterback Bergþór Phillip Pálsson finished the game throwing for 259 yards for four touchdowns and rushing another 102 yards with a rushing touchdown. Wide Receiver Kirby Crook picked up 126 receiving yards and three touchdowns.[1]
During the summer of 2017, players for the Minnesota Vikings, Tight End Kyle Rudolph,Defensive Lineman Linval Joseph, and Defensive End Danielle Hunter attended an Einherjar practice during their trip to Iceland[4], their visit came in the wake of the Vikings adoption of the Viking Thunder Clap popularized by the Iceland national football team fans, which in turn the Vikings rebranded as the Skol chant.
On the 16th of September Einherjar faced a combined team from the UK, Ouse Valley Eagles playing under the name of Ouse Valley Exiles[5] due to BAFA/IFAF not sanctioning the game. The Exiles had combined players and coaching staff from across the UK and had to play without being insured by the BAFA/BAFCA.[6] Einherjar fell short to the Exiles 20-27 in that game.[7]
In October Einherjar travelled to Mallorca for their first game outside of Iceland to face Spanish LNFA SERIE A division team Mallorca Voltors to celebrate the Voltors 30th club anniversary.[8] Einherjar bested the Voltors in a 21-14 victory. The Einherjar defense picked off a pass by Joan Santandreau and returned it to lead 7-0 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, Bergþór Pálsson and wide reciever Viðar Gauti connected for a touchdown to extend the Einherjar lead to 14-0 at the half. Viðar Gauti scored his second receiving touchdown of the day bringing the Einherjar lead to 21-0. The Voltors rallied to close the gap to 21-14 in the fourth quarter but Einherjar sealed the victory by recovering an onside kick. [9]
