El Platino (foaled on February 24, 1984) was a Puerto Rican race-horse, who became famous as a runner in Canóvanas, Puerto Rico's Hipodromo El Nuevo Comandante during the 1980s. From 1986 to 1993, El Platino ("The Silvered One") ran in 82 races, winning 39, coming in second in 7 and third place in 4.
El Platino won a number of important races named Clasico (the Puerto Rican equivalent of anglo-speaking countries' "Stakes" races) or Copa ("Cup"), including the 1987 edition of the "Copa Budweiser" (known like that due to sponsoring ties with the American beer brand), on October 25, 1987, the "Clasico Navidad" ("Christmas Classic") on December 25, 1986,[1] and the "Clasico Dia de La Raza" ("Hispanic Race Day's Classic") on October 12, 1987, all at El Nuevo Comandante.[2]
El Platino became a celebrity animal during that era in Puerto Rico, and a favorite among horse racing fans, bettors and experts alike. Many of his races were televised, some of them broadcast by Norman H. Davila.
