Electra were an East German rock group that was formed in 1969 by Bernd Aust and Mampe Peter Ludewig in Dresden, Germany. They evolved as a symphonic rock group throughout the 70's and as a pop group in the 80's. The group retired in 2015 after 46 years.[1]

History[edit]

Aust and Ludewig were schoolmates at Carl Maria von Weber. Along with other musicians, they formed the group in 1969 after they graduated. Shortly after new members joined in the early 70's, notably famous East German vocalist Stephen Trepte, who recorded and performed with various East German groups throughout the 70's and 80's. After releasing a few singles and an album in 1974, Aust and Ludewig were the only founding members left in the band. Around that time, notable members Gisbert Koreng and Rainer Uebel joined the group. They recorded an album of interpretations of classical compositions by famous German composers in 1976 called Adaptionen (Adaptations), arranged by Ludewig and Uebel. In 1978, singer Manuel Von Senden joined the group, completing the classic lineup. Von Senden would eventually become an opera singer.[2]

Like most East German groups at the time, they started to slowly evolve as a more contemporary pop and rock group[3], despite the release of their only concept album: Die sixtinische Madonna in 1980. The album released before it, 3, contains a musical interpretation of a poem written by Christian Fürchtegott Gellert[4] named Der grüne Esel (The Green Donkey). Upon the release of their 5th album, Ein Tag wie ein Brücke (A day as a bridge) in 1982, Ludewig left the group in 1984. Uebel followed suit in 1985. Upon the arrival of keyboardist Andreas Leuschner and drummer Dietmar Stephan, they reached new popularity as a pop group with the release of the single "Nie Zuvor" (Never Before) in 1984. After recording two more albums, Von Senden left the group in the beginning of 1989 shortly after the group celebrated their 20 year anniversary. Trepte briefly rejoined to record the album Der aufrechte Gang in 1989, which was not released until 2004.

In the early 90's, with Aust as frontman, the group reformed with some of its' classic members, as well as a couple of new members. They toured throughout East Germany with other notable East German groups such as Stern-Combo Meißen and Lift.[5] Ludewig and Trepte also both rejoined the group as guest vocalists and performed with the group up until 2014. The band stopped performing altogether in 2015 after a farewell tour [6], except for a one-off performance in 2018. [7]
