Electric Last Mile Solutions, or ELMS, is an electric commercial vehicle automaker focused on last mile delivery and transportation. The company produces a light-duty commercial electric van called the Urban Delivery[1] and will be producing a medium-duty commercial electric truck in 2022 called the Urban Utility.[2] The Urban Delivery began production in September 2021 and claims to be the first Class 1 commercial electric vehicle in the United States.

ELMS is a publicly traded company listed on the Nasdaq as ELMS and ELMSW.

The company is headquartered in Troy, Michigan[3] and its assembly plant is located in Mishawaka, Indiana.[4] Its 650,000 square foot plant previously built the Hummer H2 from 2002 to 2009, VPG MV-1 from 2011 to 2015, and Mercedes Benz R-Class from 2015 to 2017. [5] ELMS also has regional locations in Canada[6], San Francisco[7] and China.[8]

The company was co-founded in 2020 by CEO James Taylor and Executive Chairman Jason Luo.[9]

Taylor held various leadership roles at General Motors, serving as President of Cadillac from 2005 to 2008 and CEO of Hummer from 2008 to 2010.[10] He was also CEO of Workhorse Group from 2010 to 2012[11] and later Chairman of the Board from 2012 to 2016. He then served as Chief Sales and Marketing Officer at Karma Automotive from 2014 to 2018[12] and CEO of Seres from 2019 to 2020.[13]

Luo served as President, CEO and Board Member of Joyson Safety Systems, formerly known as Key Safety Systems, from 2007 to 2017[14] and served as Ford China CEO from 2017 to 2018.[15]

Seres, formerly known as SF Motors, planned to build its electric SUV called the SF5 at the former AM General Mishawaka plant in 2019[16] but canceled those plans to avoid sunk U.S. costs and competition[17]. Chongqing Sokon Industry Group, holding company to Seres, sold the Mishawaka plant to Taylor, who planned to start a new company that would produce electric commercial vehicles.[17]

Taylor and Luo fundraised $155 million in private investment in public equity (PIPE) money during 2020.[18] The fundraising led to a merger in June 2021 with Forum Merger III Corporation, a special purpose acquisition company (SPAC)[19], which raised a total of $294 million and valued ELMS at $1.4 billion.[18] ELMS made a down payment of $30 million on a $145 million purchase of the Mishawaka plant after finalizing the SPAC deal.[20] The company debuted June 28, 2021 on the Nasdaq.[21]

The first Urban Delivery vans shipped to customers in late September 2021[1]. ELMS entered an agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited (CATL) on October 14, 2021 to secure its battery supply through 2025 for the Urban Delivery.[22] CATL will provide lithium-ion batteries with lithium iron phosphate battery (LFP) chemistry to ELMS.[23]

Products[edit]

ELMS has two vehicles in its product portfolio. The Urban Delivery is a light-duty commercial electric vehicle in the Class 1 commercial vehicle space and the first vehicle launched by ELMS. It has an estimated range of 110 miles, cargo volume of 157 cubic feet and max payload of 2,100 pounds.[24]

The Urban Utility is an upcoming all-electric Class 3 medium duty vehicle that will launch in 2022.[2] It has a low cab forward design, an estimated range of 125 miles and curb weight of 5,291 pounds.[25]

Partnerships[edit]

ELMS has been working with different suppliers[26], upfitters, battery partners[27], service providers[28] and charging infrastructure[29] partners to develop its products and mobility services.

The company announced a long-term supply agreement with Wuling Motors to give ELMS access to EV component systems and parts from Wuling Motors’ commercial EV cargo van platform.[26] ELMS signed an agreement with Cox Automotive to provide service and support solutions for its commercial EV customers nationwide.[30] It is also ELMS collaborating with Ample to explore modular battery swapping services for commercial EV customers.[31] and has partnered with EVgo to begin building out its charging ecosystem.[29].

ELMS established its EV Campus Program to help universities understand how to reach their ESG and sustainability goals.[32] The EV Campus Program was initiated after a pilot program with the University of Notre Dame.[33]

Locations[edit]

ELMS’ headquarters is in Metro Detroit[3] among the Big Three. The company opened its Asia Pacific Operations Center (APOC)[8] in Shanghai, China in September 2021 to serve as its hub for supply chain and logistics management, engineering operations, project management and quality functions.

In October 2021, ELMS opened its Urban Mobility Lab in San Francisco[34] to develop advanced in-vehicle technology, edge-to-cloud architecture, and data-intensive applications.[7] ELMS plans to sell its vehicles in the U.S. and recently entered the Canadian market in October 2021 to expand its global footprint.[6]
