Evelyn Magdalena "Scarlet" Tjoe (/eːvəˈlən maɡ.daˈlɛ.na ʃuː/; born January 2, 1992) known professionally as Elena Choo, is an Indonesian actress. She is known for portraying the character of Felicia in the Okto comedy musical series After School (2013) and Jane in the Singaporean horror film Ghost Child (2013),[1] directed by award-winning director Gilbert Chan.[2]

Early life[edit]

Elena Choo was born on January 2, 1992 in Jakarta, Indonesia. The firstborn of three, has a younger brother, Edward Nathanael Tjoe and a younger sister, Elizabeth Olivia Tjoe. She is a fourth generation Chinese Indonesian and was raised Pentecostal Christian. Choo attended Mahatma Gandhi National School (Jakarta, Indonesia), and McKinley Elementary School (California, United States), and Bina Bangsa School (Jakarta, Indonesia) for elementary school. Upon completion of her middle school years, she then graduated high school from Gandhi Memorial Intercultural School in Jakarta, Indonesia. Choo subsequently enrolled in Management Development Institute of Singapore with a Bachelor's degree in Mass Communications from Oklahoma City University. She attended Edinburgh Business School for her post graduate education and holds a Master's degree Business Administration.

Choo's talent for performing was first discovered through a Christmas production at church. "My mom had this video of me when I was performing for the very first time on stage. I was three." At six years old, she landed her first leading role for a Christmas musical, in front of an audience of five thousand held at the Plenary Hall in Jakarta Convention Center.

In the summer of 2011, Choo received her first acting class from the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Australia. Notable alumni of the school include Cate Blanchett and Mel Gibson. The experience cemented her will to learn the craft further, and so she took the acting program in University of California, Los Angeles.

Career[edit]

Choo began acting professionally in 2010. She played the lead, Hanna, in a short film entitled Epiphany. Epiphany went on to win several awards.
