Eli Appleby-Donald
Eli Appleby-Donald is a Scottish youtuber and blog writer. She fronts a popular gardening YouTube channel and writes for her blog encouraging people to grow their own fruit, vegetables and flowers. She began writing her blog when she and her partner Kate moved to a new home and started their first garden.[1][2]
Personal life
Appleby-Donald grew up in Glasgow, Scotland but now lives in Musselburgh, Scotland after working in multiple cities throughout the U.K. in her career in educational technology.
Appleby-Donald married her wife Kate Appleby-Donald, who also appears in the channel videos, in their garden at their home in Musselburgh and their wedding was featured in an article discussing the personalisation in Humanist weddings,[3] and again in the book "We do!" about Humanist weddings by Humanist celebrant Tim Maguire.
Career
YouTube
Appleby-Donald began creating content for YouTube in 2012 to subsidise the content on her website, however in 2019 she made the decision to focus on YouTube as a content creation platform in order to help the large volume of new gardeners who had taken up the hobby during the Covid pandemic. She attributed this decision to hearing from viewers and readers who were shielding and feeling isolated and wanted to offer a regular contact with a friendly and supportive manner. Being from a small town, news of the local YouTube celebrities turned local heroes soon featured in their local newspaper The East Lothian Courier.[4]
In 2022 YouTube named her "Creator on the Rise"[5] an achievement chosen by YouTube to celebrate up and coming content creators.
Educational Technology
Appleby-Donald works in the Higher Education sector supporting digital education at the University of Edinburgh,[6] where she is often called upon to use her experience of blogging and vlogging to assist in the use of media for teaching and learning. [7][8][9]
Other media
Appleby-Donald also writes and creates video content for Rhino Greenhouses,[10] for whom she is an ambassador[11] and Scotland Grows, the Scottish gardening magazine directed at gardeners growing in the Scottish Climate[12].
