Eli Daniel Ehrenpreis (born 22 January 1958) is an American born gastroenterologist and clinical pharmacologist, clinical researcher, medical educator, author and inventor. He is notable for his expertise in clinical pharmacology, and his research includes pharmacokinetics, mathematical modeling, pharmacovigilance, Phase 1 Clinical Trials, and data mining of large databases, as related to common and rare gastrointestinal disorders. Dr. Ehrenpreis was an early researcher in HIV-associated gastrointestinal diseases.[1], focusing on HIV enteropathy [2] and AIDS-Wasting Syndrome [3] and was the first to determine that HIV enteropathy was not due to direct mucosal infection by the HIV virus [4]. His subsequent work has included the development of new treatments for Crohn's disease [5], radiation proctitis [6] and post marketing analysis of adverse drug reactions [7]

Early life[edit]

Dr. Ehrenpreis was born in New York City and attended Irvington High School (1972-1976). He majored in Music Performance at Depaul University from 1976-1978, where he studied cello with Frank Miller [8]. During college, he was a member of the cello section of the Civic Orchestra of Chicago. He completed his Bachelor of Science in Biology and graduated Magna Cum Laude from Northeastern Illinois University in 1981. He received his MD degree from UHS/The Chicago Medical School in 1985.

Medical career[edit]

Dr. Ehrenpreis completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University of Illinois Medical Center in Chicago in 1988. This was followed by completion of two Fellowships, one in Gastroenterology and one in Clinical Pharmacology at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in 1985. He has served as a Gastroenterology Fellowship Director and Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago from 1996 to 2003. He created the University of Chicago (NorthShore) Gastroenterology Fellowship and served as its director from 2011 to 2016. He is now a Professor of Medicine at Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science[9]. In 2000, was nominated by UHS/The Chicago Medical School as an alumnus member of Alpha Omega Alpha for scholarly achievement.

Publications[edit]

Dr. Ehrenpreis is the author and editor of 6 books including[10] “Anal and Rectal Diseases: A Concise Manual”], and [11] "Radiation Therapy for Pelvic Malignancies and its Consequences"], both published by Springer Verlag in 2012 and 2015 respectively. He has authored 130 publications in medical journals that include original research, invited reviews, editorials and book chapters. [12]
