Barnabas, whose full name is Elias Barnabas Inyasi, is a musician from Tanzania.[1][2][3] His breakthrough song was "“Baby I Love You”" released in 2007.[4] According to a 2018 entry on Ghafla!, he is "one of the most youthful and most conspicuous and effective lyricists cum artists/entertainers in cutting edge Tanzania."[5]

At the People's Choice Award 2015, Barnabas was nominated for Best Artist of the Year as well as Best Music Video for Wahalade.[2]

His song Nampaga was one of 13 songs banned in 2018 under an obscenity ruling by the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) based on a list of songs from the National Arts Council of Tanzania.[6]

Early career[edit]

He sang in a church choir and then at 17 years-old performed on Tanzania House of Talent (THT) while pursuing a career as a hip hop artist. He subsequently took up the guitar and found his passion.[7] He wrote the song "Niroge" with Vanessa Mdee.[8]

Influences[edit]

In 2019, Barnabas mourned the death of Rugemalira Mutahaba, who he identified as a father figure in his life.[9]
