Eliyahu (Kurt) Spinrad 1923-2008

An Israeli artist and painter, born in Vienna, Austria in 1923 and passed away in 2008, in Israel.

Childhood and "Aliyah" to Israel[edit]

Eliyahu (Kurt) Spinrad was born in Vienna, Austria in 1923. In 1938 he joined Gordonia,  a Zionist youth movement. In Gordonia the cadets learned Hebrew and the graduates organized themselves into training groups pending Aliyah to the Holy Land.

In November 1938, and in prior years, Spinrad has experienced Antisemitism in Vienna. After the Night of Broken Glass (Kristallnacht), a pogrom against Jews carried out by SA paramilitary forces and civilians throughout Nazi Germany on 9-10 November 1938 in Vienna,  he has decided to move to Israel (Aliyah). In 1939, Spinrad came to Israel with the Youth Aliyah organization.

Life in Israel[edit]

Eliyahu Spinrad settled in Kibbutz Neve Yam, where he continued his studies in high school. During his time there, he met his future wife, Miryam and they moved together to the French Carmel neighborhood in Haifa, located on the western slopes of Mount Carmel. After settling in Haifa, they expanded their family with two sons.

In 1955, Eliyahu Spinrad enrolled as a student for Structural engineering, branch of civil engineering in the Technion, a respected Israeli Institute of technology in Haifa.

After graduating, he worked in his profession in the Haifa port until his retirement in 1982.

Between 1985-1995, Eliyahu Spinrad was the manager of the Austrian console in Haifa.

Art in his life[edit]

Between 1949-1950, Eliyahu Spinrad studied in the first cohort of Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, an academic college of design and art located in Jerusalem, Israel. After retiring in 1982, he flew out to Florence, Italy, to study the Art Restoration.

Eliyahu Spinrad’s art work techniques focused on oil paintings, Watercolor painting and sketching. Some of his works were exhibited in museums in Israel.

In 2008, Eliyahu Spinrad passed away in Haifa and was buried in the Neve Yam Kibbutz’s cemetery.
