The Honourable Justice Elizabeth Anne Cheeseman is a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, sitting in the Sydney registry. She was appointed on 12 April 2021.[1][2]
Education and early career
Cheeseman graduated from the University of Sydney with a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Laws in 1990 and was admitted as a legal practitioner in 1991.[1] She worked as a solicitor for five years before being called to the New South Wales Bar in 1996. She was appointed Senior Counsel in 2012 and practised in commercial, corporate, banking, regulatory and insurance law, including proceeds of crime matters.[1]
Professional service
Cheeseman chaired the New South Wales Bar Association Practice Development Committee from 2015 to 2019, chaired the Bar Association working party on the Australian Law Reform Commission inquiry into class actions and third-party litigation funders in 2018, and served on a Professional Conduct Committee from 2011 to 2015.[1] She has also served as a ministerially appointed member of the Council of the University of New South Wales.[3]
Judicial service
Cheeseman was appointed a judge of the Federal Court on 12 April 2021.[1] A ceremonial sitting to welcome her was held on 21 May 2021 and the transcript is published by the Court.[4] The Australian Government Directory records her commission commencing on that date.[5] Her appointment was announced by the Acting Attorney-General in March 2021.[6][7]

Independent reporting has covered proceedings before Cheeseman J in insolvency and commercial cases. In 2024 the Federal Court heard applications concerning the airline Bonza’s administration; ABC News reported on a creditors’ meeting timetable addressed to her Honour.[8] In 2024–2025 national and specialist media reported on her management and decision in civil proceedings concerning alleged and proven frauds associated with the Forum Group; coverage described the scheme as “audacious” and summarised findings in favour of the banks.[9][10][11] A searchable index of her Honour’s published judgments is maintained by the Court.[12]
