Elizabeth Wakefield was one of the two main fictional characters in the book series Sweet Valley High. She was portrayed by Cynthia Daniel in the TV series of the same name. Her twin sister, Jessica was portrayed by Cynthia's twin, Brittany Daniel.[1]
Character
According to the SVH novel Last Wish, the twins' birthday is June 13, which would place them under the sign of Gemini on the zodiac.[2] Despite being more sensible and down-to-earth than her twin sister, Elizabeth was one of the few students in Sweet Valley who rivaled Jessica in popularity. She was known for being practical and a good listener, and her peers often confided in her. Elizabeth was born four minutes before Jessica. Like her sister, she was named after an ancestor, Elisabeth Johnson.[3]
Although Liz has many friends, her best friend was Enid Rollins and later Maria Slater, a close friend from middle school. Her first boyfriend and first love was Todd Wilkins. She developed feelings for him in kindergarten, offering him a tissue when he was crying. She felt a connection with him from then on. It wasn't until high school that their relationship became a reality.
Another dream of Liz's is to be a professional journalist, and she was a dedicated staff member of her school newspaper, The Oracle, in which she wrote several feature stories. She considered Oracle editor-in-chief Penny Ayala, arts editor Olivia Davidson, cartoonist Abbie Richardson, and, for a brief period, sports editor John Pfeiffer amongst her closest friends. Staff advisor Roger Collins was her mentor. She also briefly worked as an intern at a magazine called "Flair," where she initially distanced herself from Todd for work, only to discover that Todd had become a model and was having an affair with his modeling partner, supermodel Simone. She ended her relationship with Todd; the two later resumed a relationship as professional models.
At the insistence of her twin sister, Liz pledged and was accepted into Pi Beta Alpha,[4] but she considered herself a member in name only.
Liz was close to Regina Morrow and her brother Nicholas, which was unusual, since she generally avoided associating with the wealthy, whom she often found selfish. However, their sincerity won her over, and they became close friends. Nicholas had affections for her when he first moved to Sweet Valley, but she insisted that she loved only Todd, and they remained good friends. Regina's death deeply affected her, especially because they had argued the last time they spoke.
Other friends of Liz's include Julie Porter, whom she also knew from middle school; and Caroline Pearce. She initially had little time for Jessica's friends, although she and Cara Walker developed a friendship after Liz began dating Steven. Liz tolerated Lila for Jessica's sake and even intervened to help her when she was arrested for shoplifting.[5] She became more understanding of Lila after Lila was nearly assaulted by John Pfeiffer; and firmly supported her through this ordeal. Although they did not always see eye-to-eye, Elizabeth and Lila did become more respectful of one another.
After Todd moved to Vermont, Liz began dating new student Jeffrey French, a photographer for The Oracle and star of the soccer team. They broke up when Todd returned to Sweet Valley. Elizabeth reconciled with her first love and boyfriend, Todd. The couple remained together for a long time, until the Jungle Prom when a jealous Jessica spiked Elizabeth's drink to prevent her from winning Prom Queen. The alcohol led to Elizabeth getting into a car with Jessica's boyfriend Sam, resulting in his death in a drunk-driving accident. Jessica then had an affair with Todd. But after Liz and Todd resolved their issues, they reunited as a couple. At the end of the series, she was torn between her long-term love for Todd and the attraction to the charming but deceitful Devon Whitelaw, whom she later discovered to be untrustworthy. She had a brief affair with him but ended the relationship when she saw him for who he truly was. Liz broke up with Todd again in the final book of the Sweet Valley High series, Aftershock.[6] Liz and Todd often had infidelity issues, but Liz was ultimately betrayed when she discovered Todd's long-standing affair with Jessica, which eventually led to their marriage in "Sweet Valley Confidential."
The Secret Diary Super Editions reveal that Liz had secret relationships with two of Jessica's boyfriends, Ken Matthews and Sam Woodruff, though both relationships occurred before Jessica began dating them.
Sweet Valley High Senior Year
Elizabeth became more outgoing in this series. She also became the editor-in-chief of The Oracle. She briefly lived with Lila Fowler. Her love interests were Conner McDermott and Jeff French. Another of her love interests was Evan Plummer. She dated him for a while after Conner left for rehab. Her best friends in this series were Maria Slater, Tia Ramirez, and Andy Marsden.
Sweet Valley University
Elizabeth experienced significant changes in college, ending both her relationship with Todd Wilkins and her friendship with Enid (now Alexandra) Rollins. Both Todd and Alexandra began seeing each other. She developed a friendship with Nina Harper, an African-American student, bonding over their studious natures. She subsequently fell in love with Tom Watts, a fellow journalist at the campus news station and former football star. Elizabeth and Tom had a serious relationship; their relationship faced a major challenge when Elizabeth revealed that Tom's recently discovered biological father had been pursuing her romantically, and he refused to believe her, causing their breakup. After their split, she found comfort with Todd, and the two experienced a resurgence of feelings for each other to some extent. This ended when Todd's ex-girlfriend was diagnosed with cancer, prompting him to prioritize her needs. Tom and Elizabeth reunited when he learned the truth about her accusations, but the damage to their relationship was substantial. She eventually reconciled with Alexandra, although their closeness wasn't quite the same as in high school.
During sophomore year, Liz endured a turbulent relationship with her roommate, Sam Burgess, which eventually developed into romantic involvement. Convinced that Sam was unfaithful and unsuitable for her twin sister, Jessica attempted to prove this to Liz by having Sam kiss her. Liz caught her boyfriend making out with her twin sister and, without waiting for explanations, left for London, where the Elizabeth series was set.
Elizabeth
After her parents failed to convince her to talk to Jessica and allow her to explain, Liz, with Steven's support, moved to England to pursue her education. She secured a job as a maid under the pseudonym Elizabeth Bennett. However, she found herself falling in love with a duke named Max and nearly lost her job due to the discontent of other maids. In the final book, Elizabeth was confronted by Jessica (who had been reprimanded by Steven) pleading with her to return home and explain. When she refused and urged her sister to leave, Max persuaded Jessica to explain herself in London and convince Liz to listen. When Elizabeth finally did, she learned about Sam's deceitful behavior with other girls at SVU and realized Jessica had only been looking out for her.
Sweet Valley Confidential
Ten years later, Elizabeth lives in New York after discovering Jessica and Todd's affair (while Todd was engaged to her) and vowing never to speak to them again. She returned to Sweet Valley for her grandmother Marjorie's 80th birthday. Elizabeth plotted to break them up, using her friend Liam to try to seduce Jessica; however, this ultimately failed as Jessica remained devoted to Todd, and Liz's actions unintentionally embarrassed her family, culminating in a food fight. She also learned Liam had a crush on Steven (who had come out as gay), and their feelings were mutual. After Marjorie's disastrous birthday party, Ned and Alice confronted Elizabeth for her irresponsibility. When Liz tried to defend herself, Alice pointed out that Jessica, Todd, and their family did not deserve her humiliation on her grandmother's birthday. Feeling unsupported, she prepared to leave for New York. Before leaving, Bruce Patman advised her to examine herself closely. After hearing him out and learning about Winston, she took Bruce's advice to heart. On her way back to New York, she realized her long-distance relationship with Todd had been unworkable and they had drifted apart. However, she was too self-centered and controlling to admit it. When Jessica visited her in New York to apologize and attempt reconciliation with Todd, Elizabeth surprisingly admitted she had forgiven them. Jessica questioned the sudden change of heart, and Elizabeth acknowledged that Bruce had helped her understand that her relationship with Todd had concluded long ago, but that she had been unwilling to accept it. Elizabeth gave her blessing to Jessica and Todd's marriage.
During this time, she realized Bruce, a frequent presence in her life, had deep feelings for her.
The Sweet Life
Three years after the events of Sweet Valley Confidential, Elizabeth is back in Sweet Valley and in a serious relationship with Bruce Patman. She becomes embroiled in a scandal when Bruce is accused of rape. This mirrors a prior incident in high school, when Bruce attempted to assault Elizabeth during a time when she exhibited unusual behavior following a head injury. Elizabeth confronts Bruce, still harboring strong feelings for him, hoping he feels the same. But Bruce confesses his affections for another woman, Annie Whitman. Although hurt, Elizabeth allows him to pursue Annie. As she moves on from the relationship, Elizabeth recognizes that while hurt by the betrayal, she can overcome it with her family's support.
