Emaar New Year's Eve is an annual event held every 31 December at Burj Khalifa, the World's tallest building in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, organized by Emaar.[1][2]

Emaar New Year's Eve has won two Guinness World Records, including 'Largest LED-Illuminated Facade' in 2015 and 2019.[3][4][5]

In 2021, Emaar celebrated 'togetherness' in honor of frontline heroes during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.[6]

History[edit]

Origin[edit]

The Emaar New Year's Eve fireworks celebration originated in 2010 with the inauguration of the World's tallest building, Burj Khalifa. The celebration was broadcast live to over 2 million people and lasted for three minutes.[7] An accompanying sound and light show was choreographed by The Dubai Fountain.[8]

2011-2012[edit]

In 2011-2012, the Emaar New Year's Eve celebrations celebrated the 'World's largest fireworks' featuring a stunning fireworks display centred around the Burj Khalifa with fireworks shooting out from the water and moving on to a bright green laser.[7]

2012-2013[edit]

On New Year's Eve 2013, the Burj Khalifa fireworks were set to music composed by the British composer and Royal Academy of the Arts Fellow Philip Sheppard.[9]

2013-2014[edit]

New Year's Eve 2014, Dubai made a Guinness World Record for the largest ever fireworks display.[10] The celebration included 479,651 shells and lasted for six minutes, breaking all World records within the first 60 seconds. In the same year, the fireworks celebration symbolized new dawn for the city as it ended with an artificial sunrise.[10][11]

2014-2015[edit]

In 2015, the Burj Khalifa and Downtown Dubai fireworks show was the World's most-watched New Year's Eve celebration.[3] The display included more than 70,000 LED panels and won the Guinness World Records title for 'Largest LED-Illuminated Facade' on the World's tallest man-made structure.[3] The celebration was also one of the most attended to date in the region with more than one million people filling Downtown Dubai.[3]

2015-2016[edit]

Emaar hosted the 2016 New Year's Eve under the theme 'City of the Future'.[9]

2016-2017[edit]

The 2017 Emaar New Year's Eve will be remembered for the fireworks starting at the base of Burj Khalifa and shooting up floor by floor to finish with an explosive finale.[9]

2017-18[edit]

The 2018 Emaar New Year's Eve offered a unique take on its entertainment, choregraphing a multimedia light and sound show to bring in the New Year rather than its traditional firework display. The evening also marked another Guinness World Record for 'largest light and sound show organized on a single building'.[12][13][14] and was live streamed on Twitter.[15]

2018-2019[edit]

The 2019 Emaar New Year's celebrations won another two more Guinness World Records, 'largest LED-illuminated facade' and the 'tallest LED-illuminated facade'.[5][16]

2019-2020[edit]

In 2020, Emaar celebrated New Year's Eve with classic Arab music and an LED light display. Emaar partnered with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia to wrap the UAE and Saudi Arabia flags around the Burj Khalifa during the show.[9]

2020-2021[edit]

Emaar's New Year's Eve 2020 was held under the theme of 'togetherness' with the firework and laser show paying tribute to the doctors, nurses, and frontline heroes[17] amid the COVID-19 pandemic.[18][19]

In light of the COVID-19 restrictions, visitors were asked to register via the U by Emmar app, carry a colour-coded pass and wear a mask to watch the live show.[20] The show was broadcast live across the World on Zoom from 8:30 pm GST (+4 GMT) onwards.

Broadcasting collaboration[edit]

Since 2011, the broadcasting rights have been held by Dubai Media Incorporated (DMI) and Dubai TV. The event is also broadcast live around the World.[7]

In 2017 and 2018, Emaar New Year's Eve was broadcast live on Twitter,[15][21] and YouTube. In 2020, it was broadcast live for the first time on Zoom.[18]

Awards and recognition[edit]

  • 2015 - this year Dubai NYE won the title of 'Largest LED-Illuminated Facade' in the Guinness Book.[3]
  • 2018 - The light and sound show during the 2018 Emaar New Year Eve set a Guinness World Record for the largest light and sound show organized on a single building.[12][13][14]
