💼 Occupation | |
Emanuele Gabriel Cannistraci is an Italian-American full gospel minister.[1][2][3] Cannistraci is the founding pastor of Gateway City Church a multi-site church based in San Jose, California.[4][5] Gateway is the lead church in the federal civil rights action filed during the Covid-19 pandemic that sought and obtained injunctive relief against California’s Governor, Gavin Newsom, and Santa Clara County, and it's public health officer, Sarah Cody, in which the US Supreme Court on February 26, 2021 granted five churches an emergency injunction that reopened houses of worship closed by public health orders that unconstitutionally prohibited indoor religious gatherings during the pandemic. https://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/022621zr_1bo2.pdf https://www.supremecourt.gov/opinions/20pdf/20a151_4g15.pdf
Cannistraci was among the leaders in the 1980s and 1990s in the emerging apostolic and prophetic movement,[6][4][7][8] who helped to establish multiple apostolic networks,[9] including Network of Christian Ministries (NCM)[6] that unified ministers in the branches of the evangelical charismatic renewal.[10][11][12][13][14].[15]
Early years[edit]
Cannistraci was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 24, 1932 to Charles Cannistraci and his second wife Mary Rossi and was the 7th of their 9 children together.[16].[17] Cannistraci's family moved to Oakland, California where his father was a radio evangelist for 15 years on Radio KRE in Berkeley, California.[18] His sister, "Little Martha", was a child evangelist.[19][20] Cannistraci was a teenager when he started preaching on street corners in Oakland, CA.[21]
Ministerial career[edit]
Cannistraci is a recognized minister in charismatic circles including Latter Rain,[22][23] Pentecostal,[24][25] Full Gospel,[26] apostolic and prophetic ministries,[27][28][29] and other fellowships[30] and ministry networks.[31]
Young evangelist[edit]
Cannistraci was ordained on May 13, 1950 at the age of 17 by Radio Prayer League. He held outdoor revivals in Santa Cruz, CA.[32]As a young evangelist, he established three revival churches, the first in Chicago, Illinois in 1952 at the age of 19,[33] the second in Versailles, Missouri in 1953 at the age of 20,[34] and the third in San Jose, California in 1964 at the age of 32.[35]
In 1952, Shirley Bennett, the teenage daughter of the mayor of Versailles, Missouri, who would later become Cannistraci's wife, was "stricken with polio" and hospitalized in Kansas City General Hospital.[36][37][38] At Cannistraci's healing revival in Sedalia, Missouri, attended by Shirley Bennett, Cannistraci gave his testimony of "how God raised him from the dead".[39] Shirley's testimony of her healing was published in her hometown paper: "I was healed in Rev. Cannistraci's meeting in Sedalia. I had polio, was unable to walk without crutches. But now, thank God, I can walk normally."[40]
In 1954, Shirley Bennett joined the evangelistic team of R.E. Anderson, the leader of the Pentecostal Youth People's Association (PYPA) as a song leader and musician.[41][42][43]
In 1955, Cannistraci answered the PYPA's call to foreign missions.[44] Cannistraci held salvation and healing crusades in the Middle East, Holy Lands and Africa.[45][46][47][48][49] Pastor F. Langeland-Hansen, the white Afrikaan pastor of Bethshan Tabernacle in Durban, South Africa,[50] wrote a report of Cannistraci's two-week salvation and healing revival sponsored by Oral Roberts' 100,000 Souls for Christ in Africa Campaign.[51][52] The campaign funds were dedicated by Oral Roberts to winning 100,000 souls in Africa,[53] both black Africans and white Afrikaans.[54][55]
On November 5, 1955, Emanuele Cannistraci and Shirley Bennett were married in Versailles, Missouri"[56] From 1955 through 1964, Cannistraci and his wife, Shirley, held revivals.[57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65]
Pastor[edit]
In the early 1970s, during the Jesus movement, Cannistraci pastored a church of young people in Sunnyvale, California "Calvary Gospel Temple" (CGT).[66]
According to Gateway’s website, CGT moved locations within Silicon Valley, renamed Church of the Crossroads and then, Evangel Christian Fellowship ("Evangel"), then Gateway in 2003. In 1996, Cannistraci founded Impact School of Ministry, renamed Gateway School of Ministry to train the next generation of ministers, which has since graduated over 400 students in ministry.[67] In 2022, Gateway is a multi-site church with campuses in San Jose, Santa Rosa, Modesto, Hollister, and Clovis California, and Las Vegas, Nevada and Gilbert, Arizona.[68] Cannistraci's beliefs are published on Gateway's website.
Radio and television[edit]
From 1970 to 1984, Cannistraci was a radio evangelist broadcast in the San Francisco Bay Area on Radio KRE in Berkeley, Radio KPER in Gilroy, and Radio KFAX in San Francisco, California.[69] Cannistraci preached, Monday through Friday, on his church's "Camp Meeting" radio broadcast (1970-1977)[70][71][72][73][74] and "Something Special" radio broadcast (1978-1984) on Radio KFAX Dial 1100 AM.[75][76][77][78][79][80]
From 1984 to 1993, Cannistraci was the television host on Christian talk show, “New Beginnings with Emanuele Cannistraci,”[81] broadcast in the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California on UHF KICU-TV Channel 36[82][83][84][85] and in the early 1990’s on UHF KTNC-TV 42 and KKPX-TV 65.[86][87][88]
In 1978 and 1983, Cannistraci was a guest on CBN's The 700 Club, hosted by Pat Robertson[89][90][91][92][93][94] and in 1980 and 1984 on TBN's nationally televised The PTL Club[95][96] and in 1984 on "California Tonight" hosted by Elmer and Lee Bueno.[97]
In 1999 and 2000, Cannistraci was featured on CBN's The 700 Club televised series "The Passing of the Patriarchs" in interviews with Scott Ross and Gordon P. Robertson and hosted by Pat Robertson.[21]
On October 7, 2001, Cannistraci was the keynote speaker at Jesus is Lord's ZOE televised 23rd Anniversary at Luneta Park in Manila, where following 9/11, he preached that crisis releases faith and prophesied over Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, president of the Philippines.[98]
In 2017, Cannistraci shared his life story on The Good Life Hawaii radio talk program "Insights of Decades of a Fruitful Ministry-Emanuele Cannistraci", hosted by Danny Yamashiro.[52]
Apostolic and prophetic ministry[edit]
Cannistraci was a mentor to church leaders in America and other nations including the founders of megachurches in the Philippines and Indonesia.[99][100].[101][102].[103][104][105][106][107][108] Cannistraci's mentorships include:
- Steve Murrell president of Every Nation Churches & Ministries, a global church planting ministry,[109] and founder of Victory church[110][111] who considers Cannistraci to be his spiritual father;[112][113][114] in 1992, Murrell implemented a strategic plan for Victory to plant 200 churches in response to Cannistraci's prophetic word.[115]
- Jonathan Sebastian of Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach (JCSGO) posts on JCSGO's website Cannistraci's exhortation, prophetic word and instructions after the whole staff rebelled against leadership;[116][111]
- Eddie Villanueva of Jesus Is Lord Worldwide,[111][117][118][119] was started in the ministry of Jesus is Lord by Cannistraci according to Gordon P. Robertson,[114] former head of CBN ASIA, Inc..[120]
During the emerging apostolic-prophetic movement, Cannistraci helped found four apostolic networks including NCM,[6][10][11][121][12][13] AMI,[122][14][123] and The Antioch Network of Churches and Ministries,[121] which merged with John P. Kelly's apostolic network to form Antioch Churches & Ministries (ACM).[15].[124] Cannistraci was the patriarchal apostle of ACM with the overseeing apostle John P. Kelly.[15][125].[7]
Cannistraci confirmed the Latter Rain movement's vision to support the restoration of Israel,[22] and the word given to Gordon P. Robertson of his succession of Pat Robertson as CEO of CBN and co-host of The 700 Club,[114] and C. Peter Wagner's calling to train leaders in Wagner Leadership Institute.[7]
Cannistraci has been the fathering apostle of Apostolic Missions International (AMI),[126] an apostolic ministry to emerging apostles and missions[127] established in 1998. He has continued to equip pastors and leaders at the international Apostolic Leadership Summit[128] in Honolulu, Hawaii.[129][130][131][132]
Honors[edit]
- Certificate of commendation from the 2020 House of Representatives, State of Hawaii for "lifetime service... to improving the spiritual lives of people throughout the world".[133]
Political views[edit]
In the 1980's, Cannistraci was among the original 100 evangelical leaders who signed the Manifesto for the Christian Church that included a call to action for social reform based on the inerrancy of ecumenical biblical truths.[134] These ecclesiastical documents served as the foundation for political efforts endorsed by “Christian Right activists."[135] In 1992, Cannistraci supported Bush for president as he "comes closer to evangelical standards than Clinton" and distributed Christian Coalition's guide to his congregation.[136] Cannistraci's church, then Evangel Christian Fellowship, was the location of the 1993 Prayer Rally for Operation Rescue's Pro-Life “City of Refuge" campaign.[137]
