Emilio Modeste is an American jazz saxophonist and composer.[1]
Modeste is known for his work as a member of the Wallace Roney Quintet, which he was a part of from 2017 until Roney's passing in 2020[2]. Since beginning a professional career at the age of fifteen, Modeste has shared the bandstand with Ron Carter[3], Steve Jordan[4], Stanley Clarke[5], Gary Bartz[6], among many others.
Modeste appears on Wallace Roney's final studio album, entitled Blue Dawn-Blue Nights, on which he has two original compositions[7] and 2020's Music From and Inspired by “Miles Davis: Birth of the Cool”[8].
Biography
Early musical life and education
Emilio Modeste was born in Newport News, Virginia, United States. He began playing the violin at the age of three, followed by the piano and the drums by age five[1].
During his early childhood, he relocated to New York City, returning to the piano. Prior to middle school, he picked up the alto saxophone and joined the Jazz Standard Youth Orchestra, performing on Sunday brunches with mostly high school-aged musicians[1][9]. He attended Riverdale Country School[10] for middle and high school. While at Riverdale, Emilio traveled to Australia and London with the Riverdale Country School Jazz Ensemble[11]. Currently, Emilio is enrolled at New York University in the Gallatin School of Individualized Study. Modeste was mentored early on by Wynton Marsalis, Rene McLean, and Jimmy Owens.
With Wallace Roney (2017–20)
Modeste first met his soon-to-be bandleader in 2015[12] after spending years under the tutelage of tenor saxophonist, and brother of Wallace, Antoine Roney. Though Emilio would not join the band for nearly two more years, he was heavily involved in Wallace's music behind the scenes. Wallace says of Modeste's commitment prior to joining the band: "He’s one of the original ones that came over and hung around the house for years."[13].

Emilio first shared the stage with Wallace Roney in April 2017 at NJPAC, performing Wayne Shorter's Universe, previously unreleased orchestral compositions of Shorter's that were passed on to Roney[14]. The rhythm section was comprised of Patrice Rushen, Buster Williams, and Lenny White. Days later, Modeste played his first club dates with the Wallace Roney Quintet[15]. This was the beginning of a three year engagement in the band, during which Modeste toured extensively with the Quintet, among the most notable tours being in Europe in the Fall of 2017[16], Spring of 2018[17], and Fall of 2019[18], following the release of Blue Dawn-Blue Nights.
In September 2019, Modeste performed with Stanley Clarke, Lenny White, Wallace Roney, Beka Gochiashvili, and Evan Garr at the Detroit Jazz Festival. This was followed by an orchestral performance of the soundtrack to Boyz N The Hood, conducted by Clarke and featuring Modeste and Roney[5].
In October 2019, Modeste performed a tribute to In A Silent Way alongside bandleader Roney, Lenny White, John Scofield, Darryl Jones, Steve Jordan, Bernard Wright, Felipe Luciano, and Jordan Young at the Jazz Foundation of America Annual Loft Party[4].
Modeste endorses Henri Selmer Paris saxophones[19].
