Emmanuel Adjei
Emmanuel Kwasi Adjei (born October 9, 1988, in Amsterdam, The Netherlands) is a Ghanaian-Dutch film director, screenwriter and visual artist.
Career
Emmanuel’s career has been marked by collaborations with a variety of artists such as Madonna, Sevdaliza, Mark Pritchard and Bibio, and brands such as Hugo Boss, Patta, Dita and Asics.
Adjei's distinct visuals for Madonna's Dark Ballet[1] (starring American artist and activist Mykki Blanco[2]) and Batuka[3] (starring the Batukadeiras Orchestra[4]) received global acclaim[5] from the likes of Rolling Stone, The Guardian, NME and Billboard, in line with the success of his prior work that he directed for Dutch-Iranian artist Sevdaliza[6]. His short film The Formula[7] (2016) and music video Human[8] (2016), both with Sevdaliza, has been hailed by critics, and their most prominent collaboration Shahmaran[9] (2018) received significant critical acclaim[10] and numerous nominations and prizes[11] at D&AD Awards, UK Music Video Awards, Young Director Award, Camerimage, Kinsale Shark Awards, Epica Awards, Shots Awards, Creative Circle Awards, Ciclope Awards, Le Club des Directeurs Artistiques and Berlin Commercial.
Early life
Emmanuel Adjei was born in Amsterdam[12], The Netherlands, the oldest of four siblings to a Ghanaian family. He attended Individual Artistic Secondary Education in Amsterdam and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Utrecht School of the Arts in Utrecht. Adjei went further to secure a talent scholarship from the Prins Bernhard Culture Fund to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent, Belgium, where he studied Audiovisual Arts and Film. During this time he discovered his passion for experimental cinema and video installation. Both in 2013 and 2014, Adjei was awarded the Young Talent[13] grant from the Mondriaan Fund to develop his artistic practice.
