Emmanuel Omonode[1] popularly known by his stage name Upgrade, is a Nigerian singer, rapper and actor.[2]

Upgrade was born in Port Harcourt Nigeria, to Igrammer Omonode, who was also a musician.[2]He wrote his first song in 2004 after his high school education, and used to go for local shows in Port Harcourt. Upgrade started attending Benson Idahosa University to study Computer Science but later dropped out in 2010.,[3]

Upgrade grew up in a musically inclined family as his father and uncle were professional musicians which influenced him to be a musician. He used to be in a group "True Ice" which consisted of himself and a partner, in which they used ready made instrumentals to perform at local shows.[4]

In 2004, he wrote his first song,after graduating high school, however he did not follow through until 2009 when he recorded his first single in Benin.After this, he recorded more songs, but could not promote them because of a lack of sponsorship.[5]

In 2018, he relocated to Lagos and started his own record label, Mining Entertainment under which he dropped his first official single, Shinimi ft Snypa. The song was produced by Da Piano and the video was shot by Clarence Peters.[6]

Upgrade grew up listening to Fela Anikulapo Kuti and Tuface and has cited them as his musical influences.[7]
