Emplug
Emplug is an international social enterprise that provides several products and programmes for job seekers, young professionals, employers, and advertisers through its business social platform.[1] Emplug is a pioneer social enterprise and the world’s first integrated hub for highly centralized job access, funding of business ideas, and constructive revitalization of the informal sector.
History
With its headquarters in California, the startup was incorporated in the United States in 2016, four years after it was first incorporated at its African headquarters in Lagos, Nigeria[2]. Emplug was founded by Nigerian businessman, computer scientist, and consultant Azunna Chukwu in 2012. The company, however, started operations fully in 2015 and was unveiled to the public in Lagos, Nigeria, in 2016. It positions itself as a tech mechanism to offer solutions to the high rate of unemployment globally through its platform. And has been described as a “disruptive” enterprise for attempting to eliminate the middleman in the process of job creation and access to business opportunities.[3]
Products
As a social enterprise, Emplug invests in products like Tasker, Job Centre, a customized e-library, and Marketplace. Each of these products provides users with a specific tool for maximizing the platform's best offerings.[4]
Programmes
Emplug is positioning itself as the pioneering tech and social start-up in Africa for job creation and economic advancement. Earlier in 2016, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, the Vice President of Nigeria, endorsed Emplug and its initiative to curb the persistent high rate of unemployment in the country. Azunna Chukwu, the CEO and managing director of Emplug, said the mission of his venture is to create job opportunities for millions who otherwise would not be employed. The company utilizes a novel membership-style of engagement with its users, enabling recruiters, advertisers, job seekers, and others to upload and retrieve information in real-time using instant messaging, SMS, and USSD services.
Through its innovative and low-cost solutions, members of the Emplug community are connected to its services, including underserved informal sector players in remote locations with limited or no internet access. Besides job creation, the platform also dedicates 30% of its income to funding technological startups that have been mentored and trained by the organization. Emplug leverages the power of technology to facilitate its processes. Emplug is also focused on integrating the informal sector into global economies.[5]
