Engramo English is an adaptive language-learning platform, available in an international public beta version since 2018, though promotion only existed in Singapore at that time and later in Germany.[1][2]

The platform offers an intermediate-to-advanced English course, with an adaptive algorithm preparing a custom learning path for each user, employing spaced repetition.[3][4]

Education model[edit]

Engramo offers a single subscription-based e-learning course in English grammar without a pre-defined learning path or length. Instead, its underlying algorithm constructs 'missions', short series of various types of exercises, for the user based on their previous performance across grammar topics, as well as on the time elapsed since the last time the user has been exposed to a particular grammatical rule, using spaced repetition in a fashion similar to competition such as Duolingo[5] As of July 2020, there is no way to manually select a topic or grammar rule to practise.

In an effort to bring natural language to its language learning content, exercises in Engramo are put together from sentences taken from various language corpora licensed specifically for this purpose.[6]

History and development[edit]

Engramo was founded as PremySol s.r.o. (now Engramo Project s.r.o.) in 2009 by Přemysl Prokop as the sole investor with David Heřman, an aerospace engineer, as the creative leader of the project, though serious development efforts have not begun until several years later.[7][1]

In 2018, after several years in development, the web app entered public beta, available worldwide, though there was little promotion for it.[1] In November 2019, the public beta was presented on the language learning fair EXPOLINGUA Berlin.[1][2]

On May 20 2020, an Android app was released via Google Play Store as a beta available in 8 countries.[8][9]

Business model[edit]

Engramo is a paid service, though a 14-day Free Trial is available As of July 13, 2020. In case a purchase is associated with a trial account with Free Trial days left, these Free Trial days will not disappear.

Users can either subscribe to it, meaning that the payment will be automatically repeated at the end of the paid-for period and full access to the course will be prolonged, or buy membership 'as a gift', which is a one-off payment of a one-time-use link granting full access to the course until the end of the paid-for period, when another (non-automatic) purchase/subscription will be required for continued access. Both subscriptions and one-off memberships for periods of 1 month, 3 months, or 1 year.[4]

Recognitions and awards[edit]

In mid-2020, the company started collaborating with the Faculty of Arts, Charles University in Prague; the linguistic research/teaching staff of the faculty tests and reviews samples of the app's content for compliance with the faculty's standards for description and teaching of English.[10] Under this deal, the Faculty of Arts, Charles University, guarantees the quality of the e-learning course.
