Enormous: The Gorge Story is a 2021 documentary film about The Gorge Amphitheatre. The film focuses on the venue's history and its transformation into one of the most iconic outdoor music venues in America.
Overview[edit]
The documentary chronicles The Gorge's evolution from a small family vineyard into a large outdoor music venue.[1][2][3] The over 60 minute long film includes interviews with the owners of the amphitheatre, audience members and musicians who have performed at the venue.[4][5][6][7] It features interviews with Steve Miller, Pat Monahan, John Oates, Dave Matthews, Mike McCready, Jason Mraz and Dierks Bentley.[8][9][10][11][12][13][14] The film tells the story of how a 20,000+ person music venue arrived in the middle of eastern Washington farmland, hundreds of miles from any major metropolis. Despite the long trek (and perhaps because of it), The Gorge has become "a pilgrimage for the artist and the audience," according to Jason Mraz, who first played at the amphitheatre in its parking lot during one of Dave Matthews' legendary three-day shows there. “There’s no place like it in the world,” said Dave Matthews.[15]
Release and reception[edit]
Production on Enormous: The Gorge Story began in 2016. The film was produced by Tim Williams and directed by Nic Davis.[16][17] It was originally scheduled to be released in April 2020 but due to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic the release had to be postponed.[18][19][20][21] The film finally premiered in movie theaters across the country on July 21, 2021.[22][23][24][25]
The film holds an 8/10 rating on IMDb.[26] Glenn Kenny of The New York Times wrote about the film, "A loving documentary about a Pacific Northwest amphitheater, created by a long-ago natural catastrophe, that is a haven for concertgoers".[27] On October 1, 2021, the film was released on Prime Video, YouTube, Apple TV and other streaming platforms.[28][29]
