History[edit]

EnterMedia DB was established in 2001 with four key founding members the CEO being Christopher Burkey, Ian Miller, Julie Riley and Casey Abernathy. The decision was taken to go fully open source in order to provide a low-cost solution yet maintaining a product with functional and practical use in the digital asset management industry.

The CEO and co-founder, Christopher Burkey first coined the term "Media Database", a term widely used in the DAM (digital asset management) industry.[4]

EnterMedia DB[edit]

Software[edit]

EnterMedia DB is an open source cloud-based Digital Asset Management platform that allows companies and institutions to manage their digital assets — such as videos, photographs, PDFs, fonts, colors, bios and more. Entermedia DB software is built with Elasticsearch which is the main component of the software, this allows to find assets even when there are thousands of assets in a single database. Users can access and manage assets from all over the world through a valid internet connection.

Technology[edit]

The logo of the Open Source Initiative

As an Open-source software it is possible to use and edit the software without any direct permission from EnterMedia, Inc. Having open source code means everyone can collaborate, as long as they meet quality standards, and thus the software gets better with smaller competing projects. By using open source code, EnterMedia frees its users from being limited to the primary build and developer vision.[5]

EnterMedia is a customer-personalization oriented company, that services hosting solutions particularly present in non-profit, museums, and heritage institutions.[6]

Integrations and Partnerships[edit]

In 2010 EnterMedia Inc. partnered with DPCI to jointly market and sell EnterMedia DB software and to contribute to the enhancement of the EnterMedia Open Source Project.[7]

Integrations have proven to be of great help in the development of the EnterMedia's open source technology. Drupal and EnterMedia created EMBridge, a module permitting the image management functionality of Drupal by connecting it to EnterMedia DB.[8]

In 2014 Adobe InDesign integration was officially added through Silicon One by linking InDesign directly to EnterMedia-based assets, this eliminated the traditional steps of downloading assets, re-packaging and uploading.[9]

Reception[edit]

Criticism[edit]

Entermedia is a small support company that due to its business model, has had to adap for a wide range of commercial use cases. The fast development of features added features lacks appropriate testing at times.[6]

Educational Institutions[edit]

Johan Els COO and CTO of Mindset explains, Before deciding on EnterMedia as their software solution, the organization spent over a year investigating the options and potential of competing software on the open source market.

“EnterMedia came out as the best possible choice, for its flexibility, scalability, reliability, and total cost of ownership. EnterMedia’s solid features list and open API for additional development proved to be the best fit for our organization.” -Johan Els COO and CTO of Mindset[10]

EnterMedia DB currently houses more than 10 million brand assets[citation needed] for organizations worldwide, including the United Nations, Harvard University, JCDecaux and Alfred Music.[11]
