Environment & Social Research Organization (ESRO) is a non-governmental organisation headquartered in Delhi, India which is a youth oriented organization. They collaborate with young people from schools and colleges/university to fulfil their organization’s overall mission in contributing towards minimizing human suffering, maximizing their reach towards education, and bringing awareness on environmental issues, to bring in holism in their lives.

It was founded on 16th May 2013 by Mr. Sanjay Rana along with peopel with same mindset.The core focal issues being addressed by ESRO are urban solid waste management, sanitation, water resources, health system, rural development, livelihood & improvement of urban slums, forestry and eco-development. ESRO is being managed by a group of highly experienced professionals from diverse background, who in a short span of time have planned and accomplished a number of projects and programs successfully and with utmost distinctions. Apart from its own resources, ESRO also has association with several leading national and international firms who have competency and expertise in other areas. The associations with these firms have helped to address the deliverables in an integrated fashion.

History

ESRO is an NGO (registered under Societies Registration Act, XXI of 1860) was established on 16.05.2013, which is conceptualized and led by young, energetic, enthusiastic, educated professionals. All of them have a dream to eradicate problems from society, FOR A BETTER TOMORROW – for human beings as well as all other living creatures – problems regarding environment, education, health etc. in urban slums and rural areas. The Foundation is actively engaged in Western part of U.P. State comprising of Districts Baghpat, Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Saharanpur; District Dehra Dun in Uttarakhand; District Bhiwani in Haryana and few slum areas of East Delhi.

Mission & Goals

  • Environment Conservation Awareness Programs: ESRO works with school and university/college youth in engaging families, schools, and communities in environmental issues such as climate change, water conservation, and waste management.
  • Skill Development in Youth: ESRO organizes computer literacy and career counseling workshops for the community youth, by participating in our programs, the youth also reported improved communication skills and confidence, increased school engagement and awareness of environmental issues. We create many opportunities for personality development, sanitation and hygiene learning, and character development. We have recently started an art column, called, Bachho ki kalam se, a way for youth to express through art.
  • Children’s right to Free Education: ESRO provides many need based scholarships each year to support needy students’ education.
  • Rural Women Awareness-cum-Empowerment Programs: ESRO engages young college girls to help us facilitate various workshops for rural women to promote various skill sets such as sewing, candle making, and marketing their skills for profit. They also share their vision of their role in promoting environmental awareness among their families.
  • Gender Equity: ESRO consciously engage many girls in their program when they select the youths to create awareness programs. By believing in our youth’s abilities in creating change, ESRO empowers the young women engaged in their program. “Beti bachao beto padhao” (Save girl child, educate girl child) is one of ESRO's vital campaigns.
  • Awareness Programs for Organic Farming: ESRO intentionally engage farmers in the area in conversations about moving away from pesticides, insecticides, and GMOs. They have held various workshops and training on organic farming.
  • Medical Camps: Occasionally ESRO organizes various free health checkup camps such as dental, eye health, and prenatal health mostly in rural areas.  

Collaborations :

  • L&T : ESRO in collaboration of Support Trust is working with L&T limited on Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor Project in Uttar Pradesh to building a 220 Km Railway funded by World Bank. ESRO and Support Trust working for Ecological Restoration through Green Belt Development and Pond Revolution. Both Organizations are also working together to educate more than 2500 workforce involved about Water Conservation, Waste Management, Environmental Pollution, Health and Safety, Occupational Disease Spread, Prevention and Control, Defensive Driving, Social Development etc.
  • Humboldt State University, USA: It has been 5 years since ESRO and the Department of Child Development at Humboldt State University (HSU) started to collaborate. Dr. Meenal Rana, Associate Professor serves as a consultant and an evaluator of ESRO’s work with school youth in India. This partnership has evolved over the years. In 2016, Dr. Rana evaluated a two years long ESRO program in 16 schools in the Baghpat district. The evaluation report can be found on the ESRO website. In the past, Dr. Lisa Rossbacher, then president of Humboldt State University (retired, June 2019) supported this collaboration by signing appreciation certificates for participating youth and adults in the program. Dr. John Lee, ex-dean and Dr. Chris Hopper, ex-interim dean of the College of Professional Studies also supported this program in various ways. ESRO is continuing this collaboration with the new leaders at HSU, Dr. Tom Jackson, new President and Dr. Shawna Young, new dean of the College of Professional Studies. In 2018, Dr. Rana and her colleague, Professor Lonny Grafman, from the Department of Environmental Resources Engineering visited with 7 Humboldt State University students, who worked in two rural communities in India (Tavelagarhi and Daula) for 11-weeks along with eight Lady Irwin College, New Delhi, students.  The U.S. Mission to India grant supported this program. ESRO spearheaded the program in the Baghpat district by providing logistical support (i.e., housing, travels in the local communities), connecting the teams with local resources, facilitating the activities, and creating access points for the important work in water sanitation and waste management.
  • C4Y : ESRO joined hands with C4Y(Centre for Youth) to facilitate the participation and civic engagement of youth at all level of governance. They work together to make youth self-reliant, employable. Our objective is to secure adequate financial flows for improving quality of life and nurturing a skilled, healthy and inspired workforce.
  • CUTS INTERNATIONAL : ESRO is working with CUTS INTERNATIONAL in North Delhi and Delhi NCR area on “Community sharing”- project under GREEN ACTION WEEK (GWA) India 2019 campaign from last two years, which is funded by Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC). The aim of the Green Action Week Fund India is to make a valuable contribution towards advancing sustainable development and reducing poverty, by promoting worldwide awareness and advocacy activities, which encourage sustainable patterns of consumption.
