Epale is one of the two matrilineal royal houses of the Ondonga kingdom in northern Namibia, the other being Onethika. Under ordinary custom the kingship is meant to pass from one house to the other. Epale is also recorded as the birthplace of king Immanuel Kauluma Elifas (c. 1934–2019).[1]

Lineage

Ondonga succession is matrilineal. The king and queen marry outside the royal family. First in line is the oldest surviving brother of the sitting king, then sister’s sons. The Ondonga Traditional Authority may set a candidate aside.[2]

New Era has described the Ondonga royal clan as belonging to the hyena clan and as matrilineal like the commoners.[3]

After Paulus Elifas (1967–1970) and Fillemon Elifas Shuumbwa (1972–1975) both died within five years, elders kept the throne in the Epale house by installing Immanuel Kauluma Elifas, Fillemon’s younger brother, in August 1975. He reigned from Onamungundo until 2019. Because three successive kings then came from Epale, Onethika claimants argued that the next turn was theirs.

2019 succession

Elifas named nephew Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo, also of the Epale line, assistant and heir in 2002 and confirmed that to government in 2012. After Elifas died, Nangolo was installed at Onambango while a family faction named Eino Konis Kalenga at Onamungundo. Minister Peya Mushelenga recognised Nangolo under section 5 of the Traditional Authorities Act, 2000.[4]
