Oshamba is a locality in the Ondonga area of northern Namibia. It was an early seat of the Ondonga kings. Lists of kings place the court of Nembulungo lyaNgwedha (c. 1650–1690) and of Nangombe yaMvula (c. 1700–1750) at Oshamba. Later palaces included Iinenge, Omandongo, Olukonda, Onamungundo and Onambango.[1]
Kings
Nembulungo is treated as the first named king of Ondonga. The Museums Association of Namibia calls a burial place at Oshamba, marked only by poles, the oldest identified Ondonga royal grave. A second site at Ombala yaMumbwenge has a tombstone that names “Mulingi,” a nickname of Nangombe yaMvula rather than Nembulungo; the association notes that the two graves are disputed and need further work by historians.[1]
Nangombe is credited in later writing with stabilising the kingdom after Nembulungo. His nephew Nembungu lyAmutundu then ruled from Iinenge (c. 1750–1810) and is remembered as a ritual leader and the last circumcised Ndonga king.
Later seats
The king chooses his homestead. After Oshamba the line of courts includes Iinenge, Ondonga under Nangolo dhaAmutenya, Omandongo under Shikongo shaKalulu, Onamungundo, Olukonda (western Ondonga under Kambonde kaMpingana), Okaloko / Oshitambi (eastern Ondonga under Nehale lya Mpingana), Ondjumba, Ontananga, Omwandi and, since 2019, Onambango under Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo.
