Equinox Desktop Environment (EDE) is an open-source and free desktop environment created in 2003 with the aim of providing a lightweight, fast and simple user experience. It is written in C++, uses the Fast Light Toolkit (FLTK) for its graphical interface[2], and PekWM as its default window manager.[3]

    History

EDE's development first began in 2000 by Martin Pekar. Other early contributors were Mikko Lähteenmäki, Dejan Lekic, and Szasz Pal.[4] In September 2002, project moved to SourceForge. Shortly, Sanel Zukan joined the project, following with Vedran Ljubović.[5]

As of 2009, Sanel Zukan was recognized as the main developer and the head of the project.[6]

With the release of 2.0, EDE started to follow the guidelines of FreeDesktop.org[7]

    Features

EDE is lightweight and resource-friendly, it can run with as little as 128 MB of RAM, making it ideal for older systems.[8] It comes only with few pre-installed apps and its philosophy is to let users decide what they want to use for each task and which programs they want to install.[2]

It's graphical interface is inspired from the Windows 95, making it easier to use for users who are familiar with the Windows interface.[9]

Even though version 2.2 was announced, it was never released to the public.[10]
