Eren Bülbül (2002 – August 11, 2017) was a Turkish boy, who was killed in a shootout between the law enforcement forces and the militants linked to the banned Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members.[1][2][3][4]
Incident[edit]
Following a clash between police forces and the PKK near the Vazelon Monastery in Maçka's Köprüyanı neighborhood, the PKK-affiliated group entered a house in the area to buy supplies. Eren Bülbül, while showing the location of the house in which the PKK group was hiding to a squad of police and Jandarma forces, was severely wounded in the ensuing firefight along with gendarme chief sergeant Ferhat Gedik.
Gedik and Bülbül later died at the Karadeniz Teknik Üniversitesi Farabi hospital.
Aftermath[edit]
Bülbül's funeral was held at the Köprüyanı neighborhood on Saturday, August 12 following prayers at the Maçka Central Mosque. Hundreds of people attended the ceremony.
The Maçka town hall hung outside the town hall with the words "Eren Bülbül, Maçka will never forget you. Our martyrs rest in peace." The locals also hung Turkish flags on their balconies to mark the martyrdom of Bülbül.
Deputy Prime Minister Fikri Işık expressed his condolences to Bülbül's family in a visit to the hospital where Bülbül had been treated. Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, leader of the Peoples Republican Party CHP, also condemned the attack. Many NGOs, business people and sports clubs all across the nation condemned terror and the killing of 15 year old Eren Bülbül. Football teams in Turkeys top league Süper Lig also came out onto the pitch with banners in commemoration of Bülbül and stood in a one minute of silence for the entire first week of the league according to the Turkish Football Federation.
After the incident became public people found Erens facebook profile. On facebook they found a post honoring Ömer Halisdemir who died while thwarting the 2016 Turkish coup d'état attempt. Among his other posts they found a post the post (In Turkish:"Biri de çıkıp demiyor ki Eren iyi ki varsın") in which he says that no one appreciates him, which prompted a twitter trend of sharing Erens photos found on his facebook profile with the twitter hashtag #İyikiVarsınEren meaning "we appreciate you Eren".[5]
Leader of the Nationalist Movement Party MHP, Devlet Bahçeli also condemned the attack and on twitter said "Eren, look at the millions chanting #ErenİyikiVarsın (good to have you). Rest in peace our martyr."
The incident brought Turkey together and was condemned by all the main political parties.
Legacy[edit]
The school that Bülbül attended was renamed the Martyr Eren Bülbül School (Turkish:Şehit Eren Bülbül'ün Okulu).[6]
In Pop Culture[edit]
The television crime series, Arka Sokaklar on Turkish Kanal D depicted Bülbüls martyrdom in episode 451.[7]
