Eric (1886-1899) was an American Thoroughbred racehorse best known for winning the 1889 Belmont Stakes.

Background[edit]

Eric was bred in New Jersey by Pierre Lorillard IV. His sire was Duke of Magenta, who'd won the 1878 Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes. Eric was the first Belmont winner to be sired by a Belmont winner. His dam was Second Hand, a daughter of leading sire Stockwell. Eric was later sold to Alexander Cassatt.[1]

Racing Career[edit]

As a three-year-old, Eric came second in the Withers Stakes and the Tidal Stakes.[1] Ridden by jockey Billy Hayward, Eric ran in the 1889 Belmont Stakes against Zephyrus and the heavily favored Diablo. He led the race wire to wire, and won by a head. [2] [3]

The following year, Eric won the Parkway Handicap, and came third in the Brooklyn Handicap. [1]

Later Life[edit]

Eric died in July 1899. [1]
