Eric Hirshberg is an American businessman and CEO of Activision, a video game publishing company and a subsidiary of Activision Blizzard, since September 2010.

Career[edit]

At Activision, Hirshberg has led the development and launch of several major game releases, including releases of the popular first-person shooter video game franchise Call of Duty, as well as the launch of Destiny with partner Bungie. During his tenure as CEO, the company has delivered several of the largest video game launches in industry history,[1] including Call of Duty: Black Ops II which generated $1 billion in sales in 15 days.[2] In 2011, he led the launch of Skylanders, which became the first kids’ video game franchise to cross the $1 billion mark in 15 months at retail and was the best-selling kids’ video game in North America and Europe.[3] The release of Destiny in September 2014 became the biggest new video game franchise launch in history.[4]

In December 2017, NPD recognized Call of Duty: WWII as the #1 console video game in North America for 2017, resulting in Call of Duty being the top selling video game franchise in North America for the 9th year in a row.[5]

Prior to joining Activision, Hirshberg spent 13 years leading advertising agency Deutsch LA, where he was co-CEO and Chief Creative Officer. During his time at Deutsch LA, Hirshberg built the agency up from a handful of employees to more than 400[6] and the company. The agency was named National Agency of the Year three times by AdWeek and National Agency of the Year twice by Advertising Age.[7][8]

Hirshberg was inducted into the American Advertising Federation’s Hall of Achievement in 2007.[9][10] He was cited as one of the 10 Most Influential Players in Marketing by Advertising Age in 2011.[11] Hirshberg was later named one of the 2012 Creativity 50 by Advertising Age, a list that recognizes “the most influential and groundbreaking creative thinkers and doers.”[12]

In addition to his responsibilities at Activision, Hirshberg sits on the boards of his alma mater, UCLA School of the Arts and Architecture,[13] where he delivered the school’s commencement address in 2015.[14] He is also on the Board of Trustees for The XPrize Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to solving the world’s grand challenges through prized competition.[15] Hirshberg received the “Visioneering Award” to conceive the next XPrize for Global Literacy in 2013.[16] He gave a TED Talk interviewing Norman Lear in 2016.[17]

Education[edit]

Hirshberg holds a bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of California at Los Angeles.[18]
