Eric Hunter (born August 11, 1986) is a Canadian professional ice hockey player. He is currently playing for the EC VSV of the Austrian Hockey League (EBEL).
Hunter holds the distinction of having been twice drafted in the National Hockey League (NHL). He was originally selected by the Chicago Blackhawks in the 8th round (229th overall) of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft, but was not signed. He re-entered the draft two years later, and was selected by the New York Rangers in the 6th round (174th overall) of the 2006 NHL Entry Draft.
Playing career[edit]
Amateur[edit]
Hunter played major junior hockey in the Western Hockey League with the Prince George Cougars. Prior to being drafted by the Rangers Hunter attended the Edmonton Oilers training camp in 2005. He then attended the University of Alberta where he played four seasons of Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) hockey, where in his first year he was named the CIS (West) Rookie of the year, and in his last he was named the CIS Outstanding student-athlete and was awarded the Dr. Randy Gregg Award.
Professional[edit]
Following his graduation from the University of Alberta, Hunter began his professional career at the end of the 2010–11 season when he suited up for three AHL games with the Lake Erie Monsters.[1] Hunter remained with the Monsters and signed to a one-year contract for the 2011–12 season. Whilst primarily used in a checking line role, he played in a career high 75 games for 16 points.
On August 30, 2012, Hunter signed as a free agent to a one-year contract with the Stockton Thunder of the ECHL.[2] In 60 games with the Thunder, Hunter led the team into the playoffs with 17 goals and 39 points. He was loaned to AHL affiliate, the Oklahoma City Barons for 11 games.
On October 12, 2013, Hunter opted to leave the ECHL, and signed his first European contract with Danish club, Herning Blue Fox.[3] Hunter scored 13 points in just 15 games before choosing to leave the Denmark for fellow European league, the EBEL with Villacher SV on January 14, 2014. In helping VSV to the playoffs, Hunter was re-signed to a one-year contract extension on March 31, 2014.[4]
