Dr Eric Allen Jensen is a social scientist and author with a PhD from the University of Cambridge in sociology. He is an associate professor of the Department of Sociology at the University of Warwick, who specialises in social research related to public engagement and media.[3] His research has focused on the topics of non-visitor research, audience research and evaluation for informal learning and heritage institutions.[4]
Academic career[edit]
Jensen holds a PhD in sociology from the University of Cambridge (UK). Science communication has been a major theme in his research and teaching (including numerous external grants from a range of funders including the European Commission Horizon 2020), research outputs, impacts and pipeline of future work already underway (including current research grants). His publication profile includes over 100 research publications and numerous influential reports for government and non-profit organisations such as the UK government's Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and Department for Environment, Food, & Rural Affairs, the European Commission and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums. His teaching experience spans academic and professional training contexts, communication and other disciplines, and a range of topics pertaining to digital communication, social media, audience research and research methods (quantitative, qualitative and mixed methods).
Jensen's research on online public engagement with science developed during his tenure as postdoctoral research fellow for the NESTA-funded ISOTOPE (InformingScience Outreach and Public Engagement) action research project at The Open University.[5] This position involved research investigating the practices of science communicators in the UK, including the role of new media in these practices. The research was used to inform the construction and delivery of online resources aimed at aiding practitioners in developing more effective public engagement practices. Prior to researching online science communication, his research centered on the mediation of bioethical and scientific controversies in the public sphere. His empirical research on the production and content of news coverage of therapeutic cloning in Britain and the US has contributed to scholarship on Bourdieu's theory of fields, Beck's risk society and public sphere theory. This work contributes primarily to media sociology, as well as science and technology studies. It develops an empirically grounded argument about the implications of the practice of contemporary science journalism for the struggle between democracy and technocracy, in light of perspectives from political philosophy on the press as ‘fourth estate’. He has also contributed to social change theory, with an interdisciplinary ‘cyclical model of social change’ that integrates communication theory, sociological and cultural psychological perspectives.
Jensen's journal articles have been published in Public Understanding of Science,[4] Culture and Psychology,[6] New Genetics & Society, Media, Culture & Society, and Psychology & Society.[7] He wrote two chapters in Investigating Science Communication in the Information Age, published by the Oxford University Press.[8]
He is co-editor of Culture & Social Change: Transforming Society through the Power of Ideas (Information Age),[9] contributing two original theoretical chapters,[10][11] Science communication: An introduction,[2] and Culture and Social Change: Transforming Society through Power of Ideas.[12] He is the author of the books Doing real research: A practical guide to social research[13] and The therapeutic cloning debate: Global science and journalism in the public sphere.[14]
Jensen is an Associate Education Fellow at Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust,[4] he has advised and contributed to the EU-Zoos-XXI project at Durrell Wildlife Park.[4] As a researcher, Jensen has contributed to recent (2013, 2015, and 2016) global survey projects, including evaluation of "Biodiversity Is Us".[15]
