Erin Kathleen Bilbray (born 1969), also known as Erin Bilbray-Kohn is an American nonprofit consultant and politician. She is a Democrat.
Career[edit]
Bilbray is a Democratic National Committeewoman.[1] In 2006, she founded Emerge Nevada, a group that trains women to run for public office. In this role, Bilbray worked as political director for Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto, among other candidates.[2] Bilbray has also helped to found Southern Nevada Prom Closet, which provides prom dresses to teenagers who can't afford them. She was a co-founder of the Children's Free Clinic of Southern Nevada.[3] She has also worked with the American Diabetes Foundation and the Agassi Foundation.[4][5]
2014 U.S. House race[edit]
After being recruited by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC),[6] Bilbray declared her candidacy on July 1, 2013. Nevada's 3rd congressional district is currently represented by Republican Joe Heck.[4] On August 6, 2013, she was endorsed by EMILY's List,[7] and the following month the DCCC announced that Bilbray was one of its Jumpstart candidates.[8] In November 2013 she was endorsed by Frank Kassela, a professional poker player, after he dropped out of a short-lived run for the office.[9] At the end of May 2014, it was reported that Heck had raised $1.37 million for his campaign compared to Bilbray's $387,376.[10]
On June 10, 2014, Bilbray won the Democratic nomination in the district primary. Her race against Heck is expected to be one of the most watched in the country.[11][12] Nevada's 3rd is considered one of the last swing districts in the U.S. House,[13] and if Bilbray wins it could flip control of that chamber to the Democrats.[14]
Personal life[edit]
Bilbray is the daughter of former Congressman James Bilbray, who represented Nevada from 1987 to 1995.[4] She is also related to former California Republican Congressman Brian Bilbray.[15]
Bilbray attended George Mason University. She is married to pediatrician Noah Kohn. They have two daughters.[5]
