Escape from New York is an upcoming action film remake to the 1981 film of the same name. The film will be written and directed by Leigh Whannell.

Development[edit]
On February 10, 2010, Allan Loeb will rewrite the script for the remake of the 1981 dystopian sci-fi action film Escape from New York for New Line Cinema.[2] On April 22, 2010, Breck Eisner was set to direct and Neal H. Moritz, Walter Hamada and Sam Brown producing the remake.[3] On July 20, 2011, New Line lost the rights to produce the remake.[4] On March 18, 2013, Joel Silver and Studio Canal the remake's production rights with the hopes of starting a trilogy,[5] but on February 9, 2014, Silver revealed there have been script issues.[6] On January 13 2015, 20th Century Fox acquired the remake with the original's director John Carpenter producing along with The Picture Company's Andrew Rona and Alex Heineman.[7] On October 12, 2015, Luther creator Neil Cross was hired to write a new script.[8] In March 2017, it was announced that Robert Rodriguez will direct the remake.[9] On February 1, 2019, Leigh Whannell was set to write and possibly directing the remake.[1]

On March 18, 2013, Liam Neeson was expected to star in the remake.[5]
