Biography
There are no exact data on the origin of the future khan. In 1693, after the death of the Kashgar Khan Afaq Khoja, the ruler of Altyshahar, a struggle for the throne began between the heirs. The Kashgar elders, fearing the collapse of the khanate, asked the Dzungarian rulers to elect Altyshakhar Esim as their ruler, whom they declared their khan. He lived and ruled with sovereignty in Yarkent, the center of Kashgaria. After the Kashgar and Kyrgyz began the siege of Yarkent, Esim-sultan defeated them. The ruler of the Yarkent Khanate, Muhammad Mumin Khan, for unknown reasons, left with his son Afaq Khoja for Hindustan.[1] After that, he released the rebellious captives – the Kyrgyz biys and other Kashgarians, for which the Kyrgyz proclaimed him their khan. Esim's independent rule caused discontent among those around him. Relations between Esim and Danial-Khoja, by whom he was invited to the Khan's throne, escalated. According to one version, Esim was removed by the Khojas from Yarkent, and according to another, he withdrew from the administration of the khanate due to fear for his life before Danial-Khoja, which the instigators instilled in him, and was forced to return to his homeland.
