EspoCRM is browser-based customer relationship management software intended for small and medium sized companies.

    History

EspoCRM was co-founded in 2014 by Oleksii Avramenko, Yurii Kuznetsov and Taras Machyshyn.

After analyzing the open source software market and identifying CRM trends, Oleksii Avramenko began discussing the future of CRM systems. The discussion led to the beginning of EspoCRM development and testing. Yurii Kuznetsov was the leading developer of the system. Metadata Utilities and Layout handlers were developed by Taras Machyshyn.[3]

In 2015, they registered a trademark for their system in the United States and Germany.[4]

Since 2015, EspoCRM can be installed via Bitnami,[5] Softaculous,[6] and XAMPP[7] Addons. These auto-installers provide pre-packaged images for an automated setup of the application in both cloud and local environments (Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, virtual machines). It simplifies the installation of EspoCRM and runtime dependencies.

Since 2021, EspoCRM can be also installed using a Docker [8] container, which includes the application itself and all the supporting software.

    Technology

EspoCRM is built as a single-page application (SPA). The application works in a browser and dynamically rewrites the content of the webpage without reloading it. The server-side development of EspoCRM is done in PHP, while the client-side is written in JavaScript.

EspoCRM utilizes MySQL and MariaDB databases. The platform can be cloud-hosted and self-hosted.[9] It can be run on VPS [10] or on web hosting.

    License

EspoCRM is licensed under the GNU General Public License v3.0 (GPLv3). The license has been in place since the app’s first release. It allows modification of the source code of the software, as well as the creation and redistribution of derived works.

    Reception by media

EspoCRM has been recognized in the tech-industry reviews and lists.

In 2016, the system was shortlisted in the review of “Top 6 Open Source CRM tools” by opensource.com.[11]

In 2017, it was included in “CRM-Systeme: 20 Tools zur Kundenverwaltung im Check” by T3N Digital Pioneers.[12]

In 2020, the platform was listed as one of “101 Open-Source Apps To Help Your Business Thrive” by Digital blog[13] and “11 Best Open Source CRM Software” by It’s FOSS.[14][15]

In 2021, the software was picked as one of “8 Best Open Source CRM Tools” by CRM.ORG.[16]
