Ethan Gold is an American singer, songwriter, musician, producer, and soundtrack composer. In addition to creating the scores for movies including the 2019 Universal Pictures-Blumhouse Productions supernatural thriller Don't Let Go[1] and the 2018 independent drama The Song of Sway Lake,[2] he has recorded and released an eclectic series of art-rock albums.
Career[edit]
Gold's first significant musical project was producing and arranging Ash Wednesday, the 2007 debut studio album by contemporary folk-rock singer-songwriter Elvis Perkins.
After a stint as bass player in the New York-area folk band the Honey Brothers, Gold shifted his focus to scoring movies. He had been contributing original songs to the soundtracks of feature films since 1998, with credits including Mean Creek, Things to Do Before You're 30, The Quiet and Born Killers.[3] But his initial effort as a full-fledged soundtrack composer for movies was the score to the award-winning 2008 comedy Adventures of Power, which was the first feature film written and directed by Gold's brother Ari who also starred in the movie. An Adventures of Power soundtrack album was released in 2010.[4]
Subsequently, Gold relocated to Los Angeles where he turned his attention to producing a solo album of original material, Songs From a Toxic Apartment.[5] He independently released the album in the U.S. during 2011 to positive reviews from music publications including Pitchfork.[6] To promote Songs From a Toxic Apartment, Gold self-produced, shot and released a number of music videos showcasing various tracks from the album.[7]
In 2013, Gold was working on a film score and a follow-up to Songs From a Toxic Apartment when he suffered a debilitating head injury that required a significant recovery period.[8] Gold resurfaced at the end of 2017, independently releasing Songs From a Toxic Apartment in the U.K. where it was treated as new album and ranked by the Sunday Times as an essential recording along with the latest music from Björk and U2.[9] Having continued composing and producing during his convalescence, Gold issued three albums in 2018: the soundtrack of the film The Song of Sway Lake and two solo albums -- Live Undead Bedroom Closet Covers and Expanses (Teenage Synthstrumentals).
The Song of Sway Lake, written and directed by Gold's brother Ari, is the tale of two young men seeking a rare 78 rpm record, "Sway Lake," in the Adirondacks at the summer home of a formerly well-to-do family. Gold wrote, arranged and produced "Sway Lake," the pivotal title song, with multiple interpretations sung by John Grant and The Staves which Gold produced to sound like vintage 1930s/1940s records used in the movie. The soundtrack album, featuring two versions of the song as well as the rest of the score, was released by Lakeshore Records.[10]
Live Undead Bedroom Closet Covers, also released in 2018, was Gold's homage to various artists who influenced him. It's a live album of Gold covering acts including new wavers New Order and Bauhaus and latter-day art-rockers of Montreal and The Knife.[11] And 2018 saw the release of Gold's Expanses (Teenage Synthstrumentals), an album of electronic music made with primitive analog instruments.[12]
During autumn of 2019, Don't Let Go -- a paranormal crime drama from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures, starring David Oyelowo and featuring a score by Gold -- was released to theaters. Since then, Gold recorded the double-length album Earth City, inspired by romantic and environmental themes and the search for unity.[13] Slated for release later in 2020, the album is being preceded by new videos, including “Never Met a World Like You," a song that he introduced at three Los Angeles climate-change rallies in the final months of 2019 (his first live performances since his 2013 head injury), and “Our Love is Beautiful”, filmed around the world on a phone during Gold’s recovery along with fan submissions.[14]
Personal life[edit]
Gold, who is currently based in Los Angeles, California, was raised in San Francisco. His father is novelist Herbert Gold, and his mother is the late Melissa Dilworth Gold[15] who was killed in the helicopter crash that also claimed the life of concert promoter Bill Graham.[16]
