The Ethologische Gesellschaft e.V. (also Ethological Society) is a registered non-profit academic society, founded on the 10th of October 1978 in Switzerland, to promote Behavioural Biology (also Ethology) in research, teaching and the public.[1][2] It publishes twice a year a newsletter, i.e. EthoNews.[3][4] The society is associated with the journal Ethology.[5][6][7]

Conferences[edit]

The Ethologische Gesellschaft e.V. organises an annual meeting, hosted by different members of the society each year.[8][9] In collaboration with the British Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour (ASAB), the society co-hosts the European Conference on Behavioural Biology (ECBB).[10] Furthermore, in collaboration with the section ‘Behavioural Biology’ of the German Zoological Society (DZG), the society funds the yearly Graduate Student Meeting.[11]

Awards[edit]

The Ethologische Gesellschaft e.V. awards every other year the Niko Tinbergen Award to outstanding researchers in Behavioural Biology or closely related fields.[12][13] The award is named after Nikolaas Tinbergen, a Dutch Biologist who has shaped the field of Behavioural Biology for which he received the Nobel Prize together with Karl von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz. To acknowledge and reward outstanding contributions by early-career researchers, the society awards the Gwinner Award for excellent presentations at the Annual Meeting of the Ethological Society. The award is named after Eberhard Gwinner, a German Biologist who conducted pioneering work in the field of Behavioural Biology.
