Eucalyptus Goth is the first novel by Australian writer Brian Craddock, published in 2017 by Oscillate Wildly Press.[1] Written from the perspective of a multi first-person narration in the style of psychological realism, the novel follows the lives of a group of friends in Brisbane's inner-suburbs during 1996, with an emphasis on how mental illness impacts their lives.[2] The title refers to the fact that most of the characters identify as belonging to the Goth subculture, although the Punk, Metal and Skinhead scenes are also represented.[3] Parts of the novel are inspired by Craddock's own experiences within the Goth subculture and with homelessness.[4]
Much of the novel takes place in a three-story stucco building[5] nicknamed The Prozac Palace, located on Bowen Street in the Brisbane inner-city suburb of Spring Hill.[6]

Plot Summary

The novel is in three parts, and doesn't follow any traditional plot structure. Instead, it is the strength of the characters and their interaction that drives the novel,[7] and most of the chapters conclude themselves in a series of mini-plots rather than an overarching plot to the entire novel.

The novel encompasses broad critiques of Australian politics of the era, especially of the Howard Government, and takes an irreverent and introspective look at the identity of Australian subcultures prior to the digital age.
