Eureka (エウレカ, Audio file "Ja-Eureka.oga" not found, pronounced [eɯɾeka]), or Eureka Thurston (エウレカ-サーストン, e-ure-ka-sasuton), is a fictional character from the Eureka Seven franchise, created by studio Bones. She is the main female protagonist in the series and a major character in Eureka Seven: AO. In the series, Eureka struggles with communication and understanding others, often coming across as blunt due to her initial lack of empathy. Her confusion over people's emotions and behaviors makes her seem naïve in relationships. However, her experiences and feelings change significantly after meeting and falling in love with her future husband, Renton Thurston.
She was previously a top member of the military (as she puts it, a "military dog") and responsible for a great number of deaths and tragedies. Eureka's character development revolves primarily around her attempts to atone for her behavior and to learn to live without relying on orders, instead of becoming her own person.
She is considered to be one of the most excellent LFO pilots due to being the pilot of the TypeZERO, and used to be part of the United Federation's Special Operations Force unit until she left with Holland. Eureka ends up taking in three children orphaned during her time in the SOF, becoming their adoptive mother and learning about humanity.
Eureka has been well received by critics and in reviews, and is considered one of the most iconic characters in the series and Bones in particular, due to her design appearance.[2] Many critics and reviews found her role to be significant in the story's plot.
Appearances
Eureka is a girl born from the Scub Coral, an intelligent, assimilative lifeform that arrived on Earth via a satellite named "EUREKA." As a human-form Coralian, she pilots the Nirvash Type ZERO LFO, which she views not merely as a machine but as a companion with its own thoughts and feelings. Initially, Eureka is unaware of her origins or true purpose, having no memories before being discovered by Adroc, who named her "Eureka," taught her to pilot an LFO, and became a surrogate father to her.
An enigmatic figure, Eureka is a young girl who struggles to communicate and connect with others. She speaks calmly and directly, often appearing blunt due to her initial lack of empathy. Her difficulty in understanding human emotions and behavior makes her seem naïve, particularly in interpersonal relationships. Despite this, she is renowned as an exceptional LFO pilot and was previously part of the United Federation's Special Operations Force (SOF) before leaving with Holland. During her time in the SOF, Eureka adopts three orphaned children, becoming their mother and gaining some insight into human nature.
Eureka's life changes dramatically after meeting Renton Thurston, who becomes her partner and eventual husband. Although Eureka is initially emotionless and blunt, Renton's genuine affection and determined, caring personality gradually win her over. She does not understand her own feelings at first but, as she gets to know Renton and sees his devotion, she realizes she loves him and wants to spend her life with him. They marry shortly after the events of Eureka Seven, and she becomes known as "Eureka Thurston," listed with Maurice, Linck, and Maeter as part of the Thurston family on Axel's Residency Identification.
Reception
Eureka has been well received by critics and in reviews. Theron Martin of Anime News Network in his review of the series' first DVD, he describes Eureka as "calm, sensible, and soft-spoken but not necessarily shy...and is quite capable of showing joy, sadness, or earnestness without resorting to the exaggerated expressions and reactions so common in anime." Martin also said in his review of the sixth DVD that "Eureka is hardly the first person in an anime series who struggles to understand and cope with...love, but she does it more convincingly than most."[3] She was also ranked on one of the most beautiful anime girls.[4][5][6] She has also been compared to another female anime character Rei Ayanami, causing the series screenwriter Dai Satō to express dissatisfaction.[7]
Awards and nominations
Eureka was ranked 18th in the female character category of the Anime Grand Prix in 2005.[8]
