Eurodiaconia

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Eurodiaconia is an NGO based in Brussels, Belgium that represents a network of Christian organisations and churches providing social and healthcare services across Europe[1] in the spirit of diaconia. All members have their identity based in the Orthodox, Protestant, Reformist or Evangelical church and are engaged in the provision of christian humanitarian aid, support for the underprivileged, and the eradication of extreme poverty across the EU.

History[edit]

Diaconia derives from the Greek word for "service", but can also designate "love for the other".[2] In academic circles diaconia is considered as Christian social practice that does not differentiate between believers and non-believers as beneficiaries.[3] Diaconal practice aims to foster inclusion and promote social justice.[4]

The organisation has 51 members from 32 countries and territories. Its membership includes Diakonie Deutschland – Evangelischer Bundesverband, Diakonie Österreich, The Salvation Army, The Church of Scotland, Kofoeds School, Greek Evangelical Church, Church City Mission, Reformed Christian Church in Slovakia, Spanish Evangelical Church, among others.

Areas of Work[edit]

Eurodiaconia and its members work in the areas of marginalisation, social exclusion, access to employment, migration, Roma integration, healthy aging, long-term care, application of the European Social Pillar, diaconal research and project management. The organisation focuses on diaconal work and remains neutral on strictly religious matters.
